Not What They Used to Be

I play 7-string metal with .12–.74 strings, and I go through picks fast, which has lead me to Dunlop's Ultex series a few years ago.
Initially, the Ultex Jazz III and Flow picks were really nice for the price and kept their tip for a month or two before it started to affect playability.

Unfortunately, Dunlop’s quality has dropped in recent years; I’m seeing ~1mm of tip wear after just 45 minutes of playing (even on the 3.0mm Flow Jumbo). Nowadays, the Flow tips round off too fast to be worth their price. I'm pretty sure that they have reduced the density of the material to save money.

For the same price, you could buy a Chicken Pick Bermuda where one tip alone outlasts at least two Flow packs of 6, or more if you play Jumbo Flows, which come in packs of only 3.

This is not my first negative experience with Dunlop in recent years. I also had to send back 3 packs of 24 Ultex Jazz III 2.0 because their quality control has become quite questionable as well.

Because of this, I will continue looking for alternatives or simply stick to Chicken Picks, which outlast every Dunlop pick while still being relatively affordable for boutique picks.

Even certain Delrin picks, like D'addario's Black Ice, Ernie Ball Prodigy, and Swiss Picks, now outlast Dunlop's Flow and eveb their own Delrin series.

Dunlop, you became too greedy.

Sehr griffig, da fliegt nichts aus den Fingern, und nicht nur von der grösse und sondern auch der steifheit angenehmer *für mich* als der Jazz III auf den ich bis jetzt aboniert war. Lediglich die Farbe ist eher "schwarze Olive" als das grünliche, dass man erwarten würde ... aber das ist bei ein Plektrum echt zweitrangig :)

Plektrum which sound like fingertips and fingernail

These pleks became my choice after playing the green Tortex Jazz for more than 10 years. Why? Because they are the only ones which sound besides some real custom made pleks like fingers and fingernail. To my ears the fingers sound best but obviously it is a whole different level to only use fingers on the electric guitar and still do sweeps and fast double picking lines and runs. So I went through dozens of pleks and these ones along with the Flow Jumbos sound and feel after a few hours of getting used to them and causing a broken in egde - amazing.
They seem to last forever so the pack of six can easily serve you for quite a while meaning months. The only downside is the description on the THomann site which is a bit misleading and you can easily mistake those with the Jumbos as Thomann is not adding the production number so you can look them up on Dunlops webpage. Thomann should consider changing this - to match their othervise flawless service

Meine neuen Standard Plektren

Nach über 10 Jahren Benutzung der Dunlop Ultex Sharp 2mm (427), mit denen ich auch nach wie vor noch sehr zufrieden bin, hatte ich Lust, mal wieder neue Plektren auszuprobieren. Eigentlich gab es keinen Grund für einen Wechsel, aber es kann ja nicht schaden, mal wieder einen frischen Impuls ins Gitarrenspiel zu bringen.
Was einem sofort auffällt, die Form, die Kante und die Spitze sind auf präzises Solospiel ausgelegt. Damit gelingen Sweepings und Alternate Picking deutlich eleganter und, wie der Name suggeriert, fluider. Gefühlt weniger Widerstand beim Spielen als die Ultex Sharp Plektren, was sie gerade für schnelle Soli wichtig ist. Klanglich hängen die gespielten Noten besser zusammen, ohne zu "schmieren". Aufgrund des Ultex-Materials klingen sie hell, perkussiv und bringen genügend Attack bei Solis und schnellen Licks mit. Die Noten sind mehr "miteinander verbunden", als bei den Ultex Sharp.
Der Grip ist ein wenig besser als bei glatten Plektren (wie den schon genannten Ultex Sharp), sie verrutschen nicht und sie fallen nicht so schnell aus der Hand.
Die Langlebigkeit ist meines Erachtens auch etwas höher als die bereits erwähnten Ultex Sharp 2mm, gerade was die Spitze angeht.
Bei der Verarbeitung lässt sich ebenfalls nicht meckern, rundherum ein sehr gutes Plektrum, wenn man viel und schnell soliert.

Mein Fazit: Ein sehr gutes Plektrum, welches seine Stärken vor allem beim Solieren ausspielt und präzises und schnelles Spiel belohnt.
