Lollar Single Coil for Humb. Set NRMB

Nachdem ich auf einer anderen Gitarre P90-PUs zum ersten Mal kennen und schätzen gelernt hatte wollte ich auch so derartiges auf meiner Leib- und Magengitarre, einer älteren Fender, haben.
(die Auswahl für das Format "Humbucker-sized" hatte für mich einbautechnische Gründe. Ansonsten handelt es sich ja hierbei um technisch prinzipiell "echte" P90, nur halt das in anderen Maßen bzw. anderen Proportion)

Wichtig für die Auswahl auf diese war für mich, soweit es man im Netz finden und auf YT-Beiträgen ansatzweise hören kann, ein sehr dynamischer, offener, auch eher höhenreicher Klang.
Also eher nahe bei einem klassischen Fender-Single Coil als bei einem Humbucker, der mal gerne alles glattbügelt und keinem wehtut.
Ich wollte also ein kraftvoll rotziges Teil, auf keinen Fall, wie es auch bei so manchen P90ern der Fall ist, einen eher gemütlich, jazzigen Sound, also eins was mit vollem Volumen quicklebendig auf die Spielweise und vor allen Dingen auf den Anschlag reagiert.
Das habe ich bekommen. Punkt.

Speziell erwähnenswert hierbei: Die Dinger sind wie gesagt höhenreich. Aber das keinesfalls nervend. Im Gegenteil, die tiefen Saiten bekommen durch die Wiedergabe der Obertöne noch mal ein echtes Eigenleben. Besonders beim Hals-PU.
Auf jeden Fall nehme ich an der Gitarre so gut wie nie die Höhen zurück.

Erwähnenswert auch sicher das zurücknehmen des Vol.-Regler an der Gitarre: P90-typisch bricht hier nichts ein, alles klingt immer noch soweit voll und brauchbar. Der Punkt ist insbesondere für mich wichtig, da ich keine Pedale nutze.

Kurzum: Ich finde die für mich richtig gut und bin ernsthaft begeistert. Sowas schwebte mir halt heimlich vor.

Zur Verarbeitung/Finishing: Alles tadellos (bei dem Preis wäre auch alles andere echt undufte)

Letzte Anmerkung, und vielleicht Pferdefuß: Sie sind zueinander so gewickelt, das sich in der Zwischenstellung ein Humbucking-Effekt einstellt.
Ich weiß natürlich nicht, was dadurch "flöten" geht.
Auch wenn ich nicht dazu gehöre: Es gibt bestimmt Leute, die gerade das sicher schätzen wollen. Daher auch kein voller Punkt-Abzug.

Allerdings sollte dieser nicht unwichtige Punkt bei den Produkt-Specs. von Thomann durchaus aufgeführt werden.

...and neither had you, honestly. these are way beyond good, great and huge, beyond even my wildest expectation and imagination.

i have installed them onto a Ibanez MMM1, an old baritone [neckthrough] mahagony plank with 28" scale length that I string with Elixirs 012–068 and tune to Ab, and they make her... scream, moan, sing, laugh and cry, whoa!

the stock humbucker were there since it left the factory, and some really refined ones, same as George Benson's and John Scofield's, not your cheaply dead humbucker. then, over the years, i've gradually brushed my taste and grown a passion for full bandwidth, whole spectrum, great attack, (way) huge dynamic headroom, on both clean and dirt, and rotten, too, with a touch of growl at any latitude.

well, these Lollar Single Coils in 'mbucker format are quite the thing. and massively. it's like if i now had a Telecaster on steroids, with a sound bigger than a Les Paul, colored the hues of golden Dolomites, and i can still can pick harmonics as clear and liquid as the bluest of oceans.

they actually work wonders with the stock 500k pots, which run smooth as a pool marble top, and while the tone circuit would now enjoy a higher cutoff, these pickups respond to my Neutrik Ultimate TonePlug-equipped signal cable with 3 distinct, different, defined voices (plus their own real tone) that they're all to die for.

on a side note, maybe of interest to DSP-pedal junkies (and noise freaks) like i am, i was afraid of the proverbial hum that P90s are renowned for. i was totally off track, my fear entirely unjustified: they're actually as quiet as the [fully shielded] P90s of my Yamaha Revstar RS502, and get away totally unscathed by my tablefull of wailing banshees, not a tad noisier than the humbucker they've replaced.

there's an icing on the cake: the way these two giants have been matched as a set results in them adding to each other in a way that's so much different than the tone of each of them alone... and i wonder if the same result may have been reached by buying them individually instead of "as a set".

my Ibanez now's got highs and harmonics crisp and siliky, attack like a machine gun burst, and lows as deep and focused as the tightest of active hi-powered ones, but all of this happens at any gain.

this is my first set of Lollar singles that i've bought as parts, and though i've had a guitar that came stock with Lollars before, experiencing how they now make this wood glow in the dark and throw sparks and wrap you in hot chocolate, all the while grinding granite when you play it, i'd be temptied to explore Lollar's whole catalogue and place others in other guitars, honestly.

EDIT: one month later, i took the liberty to replace pots, capacitor and wiring, to check if there was still something to gain. i used 500k (audio) CTS pots, i wired everything with the same shielded cable that comes with the pickups (actually, i literally took the excess of it from both), and chose a 15nF Orange Drop capacitor instead of the stock 22 that was on the guitar before. i can't say there's a difference that can be proved, it sounded wonderful before and so does it now, the capacitor puts the response in a wider (and, to me, more usable) range, and i'm still positive that i couldn't ask for more.

Micros montés sur une Maybach Lester 54 (forme Les Paul) équipée à l'origine de micros Amber PAF. J'avais envie de tester des "P90 like" sur cette guitare mais sans toucher à la lutherie.

D'un premier abord le son est excellent, c'est vraiment chouette je trouve qu'on retrouve bien le grain des P90. Après plusieurs mois d'usage et quelques répètes mon avis est que le son est mieux défini par rapport aux PAF, c'est flagrant sur des rythmiques avec du note à note et des accords en même temps. Ca ressort mieux, je trouve que les PAF ont tendance à lisser le son. Il y a une plus grande ouverture du spectre aussi. La dynamique est impressionnante, ça peut être doux comme grognon (surtout avec un overdrive) et ça demande un peu de travail pour être propre. Globalement les gens avec qui je joue trouvent qu'on entend mieux ce que je joue.

Le micro manche a un son très rond, parfait pour des morceaux jazzy ou bluesy. Le micro chevalet est beaucoup plus sec, je préfère utiliser soit les deux micros, soit le micro grave.
J'ai câblé les micros pour, en position milieux, avoir un réglage indépendant du volume de chaque micro, ce qui permet de bien doser le rendu entre les deux.

Par rapport aux PAF Amber d'origine (qui sont des micros top aussi) impossible de dire si mieux ou pas. Les deux sont très biens, c'est juste très différent. Ceci dit il faut aimer le grain des P90.
Sur un morceau blues en slide je trouve que le lissage des PAF manque un peu sur ce morceau, à voir si une combinaison P90 en manche et PAF en chevalet ne serait pas intéressante.

Sinon pour le montage matériel pas de soucis, ça s'ajuste exactement en lieu et place des PAF. Un peu de soudure et ça roule aucun soucis à se faire. J'ai réglé la hauteur des micros assez basse, presque à fleur du capot. Trop haut je trouve le son agressif et manquant de spectre, mais ça me fait ça aussi avec les PAF. Pas trop de buzz du fait d'être des micros simples, ça buzz pas plus qu'une Telecaster. Aucun buzz avec les deux micros ensembles

On dit que le prix s'oublie mais la qualité reste ; il n'empêche que le prix pique un peu même si la qualité et le résultat sont là.
