Electric Guitar Pickup Set

It is fairly safe to say that the Fender Stratocaster is the most widely used electric guitar in the world, and virtually no other guitar can rival the level of scope for customisation that the Stratocaster provides. It should therefore come as no surprise that Fender also offers an extensive range of different pickups.

The Fender Tex Mex pickup is manufactured in Mexico and comes in an extremely budget-friendly set of three. As its name suggests, this pickup is designed to deliver a vintage Strat sound with added power and a higher output than the original, very much along the lines of Fender’s Texas Special pickups. This pickup can be found in guitars such as the Jimmie Vaughan Tex-Mex Strat.

Modern vintage sound

Fender offers a range of pickups and sets for sound modding - and not just for affordable guitar models. The Fender Tex-Mex PU set consists of three single coils designed for the bridge, middle, and neck positions. They are often considered to be a more affordable Mexican-made alternative to the Texas Specials from Fender's Custom Shop, with a sound that is almost identical, and that is why they are so popular with fans of a more modern take on the vintage sound of a Strat. As is customary for the classic Fender Stratocaster pickup configuration, these are passive pickups that do not require a battery power supply. Nevertheless, they deliver more output than classic vintage pickups or the pickup configurations of many more affordable guitars. The necessary accessories for installation are also included in the set.

Reverse-wound middle pickup

The pickups of the Fender Tex-Mex PU Set provide a warm, smooth sound thanks to their powerful AlNiCo-5 magnets, in addition to the thin layer of Polysol with which the wires are coated. Compared to real vintage pickups, they still deliver a very treble-rich response. There is no hum in positions two and four (where two pickups are active simultaneously) because the middle pickup is reverse-wound to provide a humbucking effect. All three single coils are on a par in terms of bass and mids, and the neck and middle pickups deliver a similarly warm basic sound to that of the bridge pickup. That being said, however, the latter delivers significantly more treble, which makes for a bright and richly-detailed picking sound, among other things. Additionally, the bridge pickup is overwound, which makes it louder than the other two in the set, and the output power of these three single coils is balanced somewhere between vintage pickups and "hot" modern ones.

For Texas Rock

Players who own a Squier Stratocaster or similar model and also like Blues-Rock, Texas Rock, or heavier Country styles should certainly take a closer look at the Fender Tex-Mex PU Set as a way to better achieve that sound. Thanks to its output power, the set is also ideal for those who don't want overly loud pickups. Smart spenders will also get their money's worth, as the Tex-Mex offers outstanding value for money. Thanks to the use of staggered pole pieces, the resonance of the strings is optimally balanced provided that the fingerboard has an appropriate curve - these types of staggered pickups are thus best used with caution on guitars with a more modern, relatively flat fingerboard radius: The flatter the curvature, the louder the D and G strings will be.

About Fender

Fender is without doubt one of the most legendary guitar and amplifier manufacturers of all time. The company was founded in 1946 by its namesake Leo Fender († 1991), whose innovative ideas brought a breath of fresh air into the musical world. His Telecaster, Stratocaster, Precision Bass, and Jazz Bass are not only classics – they also continue to shape the styles of musicians in countless genres to this day. Timeless Fender amplifier models such as the Bassman, Twin, Deluxe, and Princeton also enjoy a stellar reputation. Besides maintaining its classic product portfolio, however, the company is also constantly developing new products that make Fender a driving force in today’s music industry.

Upgrade, mod, adapt

The Fender Tex-Mex PU Set isn't just ideal for improving the sound of an affordable guitar model: Stratocaster variants and models with a similar setup from other brands can also benefit from an upgrade with these popular pickups, and players can also use this set to create a new sound by modding higher-quality Fender Strat models. Last but not least, these pickups can be used as a one-to-one replacement for single coils that are defective, outdated, or simply do not match in terms of sound or colour. Their white covers mean that they will be an instant visual match for numerous guitars with different finishes, and those who want to replace the entire pickguard on their Strat can use Fender's pre-wired Tex-Mex pickguard sets, which give players a fully-loaded pickguard that is ready to install.

Great sounding pups
Chas7 09.08.2019
I bought set of these for my mex tele. They are an excellent upgrade for ur Strat or any 3 single coil guitar. They sound a lot like Texas specials . They come in a lot of fender strats and even teles. The roadwork Strat I had used these. Very good highs and mids, good bottom end also. Pickups are very subjective, we all have our favorites . Some like these, some don’t. You can’t go wrong with Tex mex pups.
The mex standard pickups are ok, too muddy for my liking, these are a significant upgrade in quality. The price is good also.

Love it!

I'm not a super expert when it comes to strat sounds but I own and I have played a few and I have to say I love the sound of this set. I tend to prefer thicker/warmer strat type of sound and this set delivers exactly the sound I prefer, very bluesy and nice for many other things too. Thomann offered a great price for this set at the time I bought it.

Good alternative for Texas Specials
LaszloM 26.11.2013
If you don't have the money for Texas Specials, but you want that kind of bluesy sound, this is a good choice for you. Lower output, thus a bit cleaner, but enough power to play blues. Cheap, delivers the sound, what else do you need?

Sounds better than the demo
Wilson WIlsonson 29.01.2021
Installed on a second hand Harley Benton Strat.
First time I heard the pickups after the installation I was baffled. I could not wished for a better clean sound.
These are a bitt "hotter" sounding pickups as standard Fender pickups, but overall can produce good clean tones and great classic rock tone.
