This is the first DI box I've been using.
I use 81/85 EMG's on guitar and also an active pickup on bass. The last one has an extremely high output, that no audio interface could handle (from those which I've been using: Avid FastTrack C400 and Focusrite Forte). The JDI handles both in excellent way. There is no any overload or distortion, just saturating when signal comes to it's highest levels. It all sound in a very musical way comparing to direct instrument input on audio interfaces.
I also tried the JDI before Axe FX II input and the bass sounded significantly better this way while the guitar sounded better without it.
The build quality seems to be very good.
'Ground' button is a very useful feature. It helps to cut off the noise while using tube amplifier and other devices like audio interface simultaneously.
I had not opportunity to compere the JDI with other DI boxes but nevertheless I'm very happy with it.

Superb Passive DI
bass_jam 02.08.2017
I use the Radial JDI for recording bass and as DI on gigs.

Most of my basses are active some with a very high output which matches well with a passive DI. I have used other DI's from pedal board preamps and bass amps before but the Radial is definitely a step up and sounds less compressed. The signal has a very good dynamic range, not much colouring going on, a very low noise floor, it needs no powering and the Radial built like a tank.

Simple and easy review of 6 DI's
RL-NL 07.05.2025
Passive:
Radial Pro DI
Radial JDI
Telefunken TDP-1

Active:
Rupert Neve DI / RNDI (normal version, not the mini)
Radial J48
Telefunken TDA-1

Passive vs Active DI's:
Active DI's have a more defined sound image overall.
The level difference between the active and passive DI's is huge, 40-50% level difference! It is wise to use an active DI so the sound engineer does not have to boost your signal. Boosting = more noise, having to lowering signal / gain does not give issues.

Radial ProDI vs JDI:
JDI has more definition in low / low-mid + a bit more highs.

Telefunken's vs the rest:
The Telefunken's have a big high cut, it sound like high cut at 1000hz. (a guess, I did not measure)
They have more Low-mids then the RNDI and similair Low-mids to the Radials, but way less highs.

Rupert Neve DI and Telefunken's:
They both have (J)FET transistors inside, that gives them tube like compression. When you use a separate compressor with the RNDI or Telefunken's, especially a J(FET) compressor (1176 style), then your definition might get lost. (I experienced this myself)
If you want full control over your compression and saturation with a separate device/pedal, then the Radials are a better choice.

Rupert Neve DI vs J48:
The J48 has more definition in Low-Mids and highs.

My advice for live use:
Skip the passive DI's and the Telefunken's.
For bass-guitar use the Radial J48. For keys, acoustic and electric guitars use the Rupert Neve DI (beware angled plugs do not fit well with the 'normal RNDI', buy the M-version if you want to use angled plugs)

Solid and awesome

I didn't know I needed this until I bought it. Now I'm runnign through it on almost all my tracks. Radial is a solid company from Canada making some of the most useful gear out there. This JDI is a classic. It's passive, so no power needed, it's built to last years, the sound it produces is warm and smooth, and the features on it are super useful. I just ran it from the output of my pedal board to the guitar amp and it sounds better with it in the chain then without. Also great for recording. Just tried a drum machine through it directly into DAW. Sounds great. I like this DI.
