Fortin Zuul Plus Noise Gate

Well....as tou can probably guess from looking at all the online videos of this product, if you are looking for a gate with which to produce choppy/staccato djent/metal - this will do you proud.

But....if (like me) you are looking for something that handles amp/mediumm gain noise, maintains natural decay/tails and can respond to rolling down volume pots on the guitar as you clean up or swell, this is probably not what you are looking for.

Yes, the overall threshold is adjustable and you have fine tuning of the attack and release, the Zuul Plus does not suck your tone and responds very (too?) quickly. All good so far.....

But, using both single coils and humbcukers into a vintage 70's Marshall 50w head and Friedman Twin Sister (both running at around 8 on Vol/Gain knobs respectively with Fullton Ranger into the input) I was unable to find a setting that (a) allowed me to capture the initial pick attack unaltered (without the gate opening/reacting to the slightest pressure on the strings and producing a bizarre and intensely itrritating artefact that attracted filthy looks from the rest of the band) or (b) notes to decay naturally without an obvious "slammed in the face" closure - even with reverb and delay post the pedal to try to mask this.

Also, being a gate, when open it lets everything through - maybe not a problem on metal/high gain styles - but that "everything" includes all the hiss and mess from a kranked amp.

I believe that there are other pedal format gates out there that are a bit more flexible (TC Sentry) and allow "partial opening" for more natural feel/sound but for me, I''m sticking with my trusty Rocktron Hush - it allows the instrument to breathe and a more natural sounding/feeling flowing playing style withjout annoying artefacts or the feeling that you are fighting your rig.

Um es vorwegzunehmen: Ich habe zuvor noch kein anderes Noise Gate ausprobiert. Vom Zuul+ bin ich jedoch sehr begeistert. Zuerst einmal macht es natürlich, was es soll: leise, wenn es leise sein soll. Ich verwende es gerne vor einem heftig verzerrten Fuzz-Pedal, um dreckige Soli (mit E-Gitarre oder Bass VI) etwas aufzuräumen. Das funktioniert wunderbar, und ich finde es im Nachhinein schade, dass ich nicht schon vor Jahrzehnten auf die Idee gekommen bin, mir mal ein Gate fürs Pedalboard zu kaufen.

Entscheidend für meine Wahl war das "Key"-Feature beim Zuul+. Ich gehe mit einem extra Kabel aus dem Bypass meines Stimmgerätes, das am Anfang der Kette steht, direkt in den Key-In-Eingang am Zuul+. Zwischen Stimmgerät und dem Fuzz-Verzerrer befinden sich bei mir noch einige andere Effektpedale, u.a. ein Overdrive, das ich gerne zusätzlich zum Fuzz einschalte. Durch die Key-in-Funktion kommt als Trigger beim Zuul+ jedoch nur das cleane Signal aus dem Stimmgerät an – und das Noise Gate hat somit ein sauberes Signal, mit dem es arbeiten kann. Kann sein, dass das Ergebnis ein ähnliches wäre, wenn das Zuul+ gleich das zweite Pedal in meiner Effektkette wäre, also noch vor dem Overdrive – das habe ich aber, um ehrlich zu sein, gar nicht erst ausprobiert, weil mir das Key-Feature von Anfang an sinnvoll und sympathisch erschien.

Negativ finde ich eigentlich bloß zwei Dinge: 1. dass das Gerät keine Gummifüße hat, sondern auf seiner glatten Unterseite aufliegt – ich nutze kein Pealboard, auf dem alles fest montiert ist, und somit ist die Unterseite des Zuul+ natürlich bald zerkratzt. Auf glatten Bühnen rutscht das Pedal natürlich.
Und 2. dass Die Buchsen für In und Out an der Oberseite angebracht sind. An den Seiten hätten sie mir persönlich mehr zugesagt. Dafür einen Punkt Abzug bei den Features, aber eigentlich sind das vernachlässigbare Kleinigkeiten.

Ansonsten sieht das Zuul+ sehr edel aus, und die Potis haben einen angenehm schweren Widerstand. Mir gefällt, dass man das Release einstellen kann, für den Fall, dass der Ton mal etwas sanfter ausfaden soll. Und wie die Leuchtanzeige arbeitet, finde ich auch super: Sie zeigt nicht nur an, ob das Gerät aktuell eingeschaltet ist, sondern durch verschiedene Farben auch, ob das Gate gerade offen oder geschlossen ist.

Alles in allem: Ein wunderbares Pedal, wenn auch etwas teuer für ein Gerät, das bloß an und aus macht. Ich würde es jedoch sofort wieder kaufen.
