Tone King Imperial Tri-Tube Preamp

I must say, the hype is absolutely justified. The Tone King Imperial pedal sounds phenomenal. I've used the UA Dream 65 and previously owned a ToneX, but to my ears, the Tone King easily outperforms them both. The sound has this rich, full-bodied character with a truly analog feel – it's hard to describe, but it just feels right when you play through it.

What really stands out, apart from the tone, is the user experience. The software is miles ahead of both UA’s and especially the ToneX’s. I actually sold the ToneX because I couldn’t stand the software – it was clunky and frustrating. With the Tone King, it’s refreshingly simple: download the app, plug in the pedal, and it just works. Why can’t other manufacturers get this right?

It also takes pedals better than anything I’ve tried before, which is a huge plus. Yes, it’s on the pricey side, but in my opinion, it’s absolutely worth it. I genuinely hope this pedal is successful enough to make other manufacturers rethink their approach to both tone and user experience.

As far as amp sims go, I truly believe this is the way forward. Well done, Tone King!

Bought this a bit on impulse for trying out in my home studio. Regretted it at first as I should really use my money on other stuff. I have a Tone King Gremlin, which sounds great on my recordings, but I usually need to record DI and reamp afterwards, which is a tedious process.
I’ve tried a lot of software amp modellers and found noone that has impressed me. I’m mostly after a clean guitar sound.
The imperial preamp pedal sounds like an amp and the cleans are really great. I can actually record through this and it sounds just as good or even better than when I record through my Gremlin with a Royer mic.

I was a bit disappointed with the tremolo at first, but now it's hard to not have it on in a rather subtle setting. The reverb is also really nice and is always on.
My only complaint is that a couple of the jack connections seems a bit loose, depending on which cable I use. I keep it connected in the studio all the time, so not a big issue, but if I were to use it live it could have been a problem. That's why I give it 4 stars on quality and handling.

Der Tone King Imperial Tri Tube Preamp ist für mich die fast! perfekte Lösung, wenn man einen echten Röhrenamp aufs Pedalboard bringen möchte. Warum nur fast? Dazu gleich mehr – erst mal das Positive:

Die Verarbeitung ist makellos. Alles wirkt extrem hochwertig: Die Regler haben einen angenehmen Widerstand, die Schalter schalten präzise und satt, und selbst die Anschlüsse machen einen sehr soliden Eindruck. Besonders gut gefällt mir, dass für den Kopfhörerausgang das große Klinkenformat gewählt wurde – das wirkt professioneller und passt besser ins Setup.

Klanglich spielt der Tone King in der Oberliga. Die Cleansounds sind brillant, warm und lebendig – typisch amerikanisch. Die Zerrsounds erinnern an klassische Vintage-Amps und klingen sehr musikalisch. Besonders schön: Reverb und Tremolo sind hervorragend abgestimmt und fügen sich harmonisch in den Vintage-Sound ein. Ich hatte vorher den Strymon Iridium auf dem Board – und ja, der Tone King klingt tatsächlich noch ein Stück besser. Aber: Der Unterschied ist nicht riesig. Wer bereits einen guten Modeller nutzt, bekommt hier eine Steigerung, aber keinen Quantensprung.

Nun zum „fast“: Die größten Einschränkungen liegen in der Speicherbarkeit der Effekte. Zwar lässt sich für jeden Kanal speichern, ob Reverb und Tremolo aktiv sind oder nicht – aber leider nicht deren Parameter. Da beide Effekte digital! sind, wäre es technisch eigentlich möglich und würde den Wechsel zwischen Rhythm und Lead deutlich flexibler machen. Gerade beim Hall wäre das sinnvoll. Der beeindruckende Stereoeffekt des Tremolos ist übrigens nicht abschaltbar – was schade ist, wenn man ihn mal nicht möchte. Vielleicht wird das in einem kommenden Firmwareupdate behoben.

Ein weiterer Punkt, der bei der Kaufentscheidung berücksichtigt werden sollte: Die Stromversorgung! Der Preamp braucht 9W – deutlich mehr als übliche Pedale. Die meisten Pedalboard-Netzteile kommen damit nicht klar. Man muss also höchst wahrscheinlich ein zusätzliches, leistungsstarkes Netzteil einplanen – und die sind leider rar und teuer.

Fazit: Ein klanglich und qualitativ großartiges Gerät mit viel Charakter und echter Röhre. Für Puristen und Vintage-Fans ein Traum. Mit ein paar softwareseitigen Verbesserungen (z. B. speicherbare Effektparameter) wäre es wirklich perfekt. So bleibt es ein sehr guter, aber nicht ganz kompromissloser Preamp fürs Board.
