Successful lectern

Horst P., 18.10.2013
For 3 months I have the desk Expression1 from the company Soundcraft in operation and am so very to peace.

What appealed to me is the color-controlled areas for input sensitivity including phantom power, EQ's, compressor, gates and the illuminated faders, which provide an immediate overview, eg pre, post or aux. They change color depending on the setting and operation mode.
All illuminated controls reproduce the set value depending on the pre-selection, eg gain, pan or filter - the controls have multiple functions but are clearly structured and quickly assignable via buttons - and this also applies to the areas of input sensitivity, EQ's, compressors, delay etc.
With the SEL button, I have an immediate graphical overview of all settings for this area per channel strip. Here, the engineers thought of the practitioners.

Via extensive routing possibilities, the console can be adapted to the needs of the operator, however, it is necessary first of all to consider how I would like to route something, and a lot of patience and perseverance. A fable for technique is absolutely necessary.
The supplied German manual is a little rough - here, more examples could be given to the operator more information.

Since only 14 motor faders are available for the inputs - there are 16 microphone inputs and 2 stereo line inputs - I have to switch the layers / layers by buttons. It is necessary to look carefully during the live operation. But if you are skilfully routed, the most important entrances are on level A.
The routing to the mix buses is very good and easy solved, since there is only to note that Soundcraft differs in mono and stereo mix buses. Also in the display of the desk is divided into different menus well done and thus clear. If I adjust a regulator, I get there immediately the corresponding setting value, very good!

The fact that Soundcraft is based on the know-how of Lexicon for the 4 effect paths guarantees good effect like reverb etc. What is also very pleasant is that all settings of the mixer can be stored via shows and cues.
With the function Isolate, different parameters can be locked, but this requires detailed studies with the instruction manual and innumerable errors, which sometimes frustrated me. Maybe there are still ways to more intuitive?

For several days I have installed a Multi I / O card, which is using my MAC and Cubase via Firewire. No driver is necessary and it can start immediately. However, only a brief information sheet in DIN-A-4 and in English language has been provided. I can ask for my good money more! Until I got the whole thing up and running, I got quite a sweat and I was quite mad at Soundcraft. But thanks to the company audio and the very competent support, I then still got the curve.

Conclusion:
I'm amazed at the successful console. In the analogue age, equipment towers would be needed to realize the integrated functions of expression and at a very low weight.
The disadvantage is that in a narrow place several layers are necessary.
Allen & Heath offers with the QU16 comparable for less money, but unfortunately with quirks. A small minus is that on the back of the desk "Made in China" is to be read. I hope that the workers have decent wages and working conditions and are not exploited!

Great product

Romaric, 04.08.2015
I already have a Si Compact 24 for 3 or 4 years which I am very happy, so it is naturally when I needed a second console that I chose the SiEx1. The ergonomics of the two consoles is the same but the knobs of the SiEx are much more pleasant to the touch.

These consoles are hyper intuitive. When I introduced them to new users, they immediately took their marks even though some had never touched a digital consoles.

For details of the SiEx1, 16 microphone + 2 stereo pairs in 6.35 Jack, 16 analog outputs in XLR plus a pair of AES digital I / O (I use it regularly for an external effect TCM2000, a pre-amp Dbx 386 or directly attack my EV diff DX46), semi-parametric EQ4bandes, low cut / invert phase, 48v compressor and gate on each micro input. All output busses also benefit from a 28bit EQ graphic + a parametric + compression + delay.
To finish the console has 4 multi effect Lexicon with tap tempo.

On my Si Compact I added the multi-digital card which can also be installed on the SiEx transforming it into a 32 * 32 audio interface. Perso, I connect a Mac with protools in firewire (USB for PC) to make multi track recording. (This card also has an ADAT port that I have not used yet). Otherwise For the sound, I am fan, it is warm, the console cash very well the high level and the result remains musical, (not like the X32 that everyone is ripping right now and whose personal, Not at all the sound that does not seem natural to me and is exaggeratedly loaded at the top of the spectrum).

These consoles (Si Compact and SiEx) have never planted yet.

The addition of a Wifi router, the application Ipad (only Ipad but a mini suffi) makes it possible to control the console remotely which is very convenient especially for the management of stage returns.

I put a very small flat. Two in fact. No PAD on the inputs and, the USB port is used only for the management of the scene memories or update of the console. I told myself that it should not be complicated to make it functional for a live recording / recording of a stereo pair in Wave format or even in Mp3 ...

In short, I love it. I am a small provider and made around 80 dates a year with these console. Of course I happen to rent for a closer look Midas Pro1 / Pro2 and Avid SC48. I love these big consoles but their prices do not match my market reality.
