Seymour Duncan SPH90-1B Nickel Cover

Pickup

P90 pickups are considered by many guitarists to produce the best sound around. Powerful and with more attitude than a conventional single coil while clearer and less compromising than a humbucker, these PUs have enjoyed a certain popularity ever since their release, but always retained the image of an insider tip. This was in part due to the fact that P90 pickups only fitted into specially milled pickup slots that were larger than those made for traditional single coils and smaller than those for humbuckers.

With the Phat Cats comes the P90 sound - finally - in the normal humbucker format, allowing one of these to fit into almost any guitar.

My new standard for rock and punk ... !!

TobiasO, 24.10.2010
I've heard a lot about P90-PUs, but what now comes out of my Paula surpasses my expectations by far. Have often experimented with humbuckers, and have also played from the beginning humbucker. For a long time I was also very satisfied with my sound. I play a dual rectifier (which I just want to sell by the way :)) along with 2 guitars from LTD. Lastly, both were equipped with the Seymour Duncan SH-4 in the bridge. The sound was very centered and growling, which I wanted. However, I was on the time after the search for MY sound. And he has little distortion in my ears, a clear response to the strings, a lot of dynamism and is very open. However, I have never achieved with my SH-4ern as well as other PUs, since these sound only from a certain Destruction full and powerful.

The Phat Cat was my switch to a one-coil, as I expected all these dynamics and features from a P90. And I was not disappointed. Compared to the SH-4, it is relatively bassless, but one of my case is very good. I do not like it when the guitar comes into the frequency range of the bass. So I can finally use the bass regulator at the Amp meaningfully. In the mids, he is tight and straight, the highs just pounding around the ears without sounding sharp. A very balanced sound. What I like about the sound of a P90 is that it gives a slightly acoustical, uncompressed sound that translates every slight nuance in playing, one of the main problems I had with humbuckers. If I can now hear this sound over nen orange, I would go with my equipment into the crate.

Still a summary of the sound:
Clean: Every sound is clear, even when a strong attack is never dull. Chords are a dream in terms of assertiveness.
Crunch. Actually like clean, just a bit smackier and fuller.
Zerre: The hammer! Absolutely no mud as with some humbuckers, remains about 3 times as long dynamically in the speech even with high degree of distortion.

The only downside: Phat Cat is humming, and not too tight. But it is worth it!

The punch of the double and the expressiveness of the single winding

Cyril8696, 22.11.2013
After several years playing guitars typed Les Paul, and always this feeling of lack of finesse and a sound too dull.
I could not get any asthmatic crunch sounds, clean soft knee and overdrive / distortion sounds without c ...... s.
Some will say that it's the Les Paul sound, but for me it's not the one that made it famous, let alone the best guitars of its kind.

The pickups do not work miracles and especially they do not manufacture what the violin of the guitar does not generate.
Once we understand that, we can choose a microphone without too much illusion.

This is what I did for the SPH90-1B and the SPH90-1N and frankly it really complements a mahogany guitar + rosewood fingerboard.

I gained clarity, precision; the notes are less muddy and it really makes the Marshall sing (the old-fashioned way). The answer to the attacks is more frank and suddenly the gain is dynamic gives full meaning to the game of the right hand.
The output level is certainly a little lower than most current doubles, but the sound is so much more balanced that you win much more than you lose.

For the background noise, it snores a bit if you approach a transformer or a neon, but it's less shocking than ordinary single coils.

Like what to have a big sound, humbuckers under steroids are far from the solution.

Last detail and not least ... no need to redo on the body of the guitar as to install it.
