Good small diagram condenser mic

Matheew, 01.09.2014
Nice sounding mics, similar like octava mk012 but little bit dark on highs. Very useable on acoustic guitar, piano or drums overheads. You don't need -10db pad like on octava's, there's no sonic distortion.

Top quality for special applications

Norbert E., 11.12.2010
My opinion in advance: The Haun MBC660 is a top microphone at an incredibly low price. However, it is anything but an all-rounder. This makes the view of the frequency curve clear. It shows a steady bass reduction, which starts at 600 Hz, and vice versa a treble lift, which starts between 2.5 and 8 kHz depending on the angle of incidence. The matt black housing with the carefully engraved serial number makes a really expensive impression. Savings were made for the storage box and the (photocopied?) Data sheet. OK then! It is also important to know that it is a very quiet microphone. So you need a good preamplifier.

Now to my practical experiences. I used the microphone for acoustic guitar and (in stereo) for choral recordings. In the case of the guitar, the mentioned bass reduction acts as a compensation for the proximity effect. Without the use of an EQ, the sound image is almost perfect, with a clear tendency to brilliance and a beguiling silvery shimmer. Whoever is looking for this is well served here. Different with the choral recording. As the main microphone pair, I think it is inappropriate. There is simply too much the lower frequency components. As support it is conditionally. That is when you are looking for something to increase your presence.

In the case of close-miking the women's voices (in conjunction with a remote microphone pair with spherical characteristics for amplifying the volume of the room), the voices were slightly flat and partly shrill. I could correct this only with massive EQ use, with an increase of the lower frequencies and a strong lowering by 3 kHz.
