Proco Fatrat

I bought this because I wanted a thicker sounding proco rat sound. Having owned several iterations of the rat pedal in the past, I thought I would give this one a go. A good year or so down the line, I have decided that although this pedal has its uses it is overpriced.

Pros:
Classic rat tone, with the ability to dial in the tone more specifically. Switches are handy for cutting through the mix or thickening the sound of the dirt pedal. It works well with humbuckers or single coils.

Cons:
The price. A lot of people are opting for the cheaper clones you see around that can do the same thing.

This is great for thick 90's dirt tones. The rat voiced pedals are popular with grunge and indie bands, and is a useful in front of a clean amp. The Fat Rat is probably the best of the bunch, as it can cover most of the ground the other pedals are trying to achieve.

First of all i already like the way the original RAT sounds on guitars and i was on the lookout for a distortion pedal for my synths.
Well the name says it all. It can go very low and it can compliment (or obliterate) a synth especially when creating bass sounds. Very cool sound, it has the grit and the 3D feeling i was looking for.
I've also tried it with a bass guitar and the results were amazing.
Although it operates on a 9V power supply if you have a 18V one use it. It helps with headroom a lot.

I got fatrat as a fan of '80 rat sound and i was really curious how the new features (fat & mosfet) could affect the sound of my rickenbacker 4003. Well, the result is really awesome. The "fat" mode is the way to go for the bass. The "mosfet" mode makes the sound more wide and soft. though I found out that the "stock" (not "mosfet") keeps more the attack of playing. Depending of the needs i switch it to "mosfet" but i mostly play with "stock".
Also, it is remarkable (as in all rats) that with just 2 knobs and a volume knob you can make out various sounds, from clean with little dirt to real distorted and fuzzy.
A very very interesting thing is that the op amp is socketed. +1 to the open minded people of proco for adding this option. So, if desired, the replacement of the op amp with others is really easy. I did change it with the legendary lm308n and believe me it is worthy doing this. The sound with the stock op amp is really good but lm308n gave this pedal really better fuzzy low end.

Ich bin zwar Baujahr 82', habe aber die Zeit der 80er nur eher peripher in Windeln mitbekommen. Der Überlieferung nach soll die proco Rat ja in dieser Zeit wohl der Hype schlechthin gewesen sein. Aber auch noch heute? In Zeiten von Amp-In-A-Box Pedalen (Friedman, Bogner, Strymon...)? Mit einem C64 will ja heute auch niemand mehr arbeiten!? Nach ausgiebiger Recherche nach einen neuen Distortion Pedal bin ich auf die Rat gestoßen und habe diese Frage für mich mit einem eindeutigen JA beantwortet! Ich habe kein Vergleich mit den anderen Versionen der Ratte, aber die FatRat habe ich sofort ins Herz geschlossen. Originale Schaltung plus zwei kleinere Modifikationen, super! Was mich begeistert ist die beeindruckende Durchsetzungsfähigkeit der Verzerrung (80's Guitar-Hero Solos...) bei gleichzeitiger, hmm, "Transparenz"? Ich will gar nicht ins esoterische abdriften, aber irgendwie ist die Rat Harsch und Wohlklingend zugleich wenn das Sinn macht? Nicht falsch verstehen, die Rat "Färbt" den Klang immens, aber es klingt eben meiner Meinung nach genau wie es klingen soll! Schneidend, Hell, Obertonreich und Wohlklingend. Bei der vorliegenden Version der Rat ist ein 18v betrieb möglich (Siehe Website ProCo), was ich jedoch nicht so mochte. Der Bass wir präsenter und es klingt "näher dran", aber es ergibt sich auch eine gewisse "härte" im Spiel die ich nicht so mochte. Geschmackssache, aber ein dickes Plus für die Option! Die Beiden zusätzliche Modis sind nice to have aber haben mich nicht uneingeschränkt vom Hocker gehauen. Fat-Mode bringts für low-gain sounds, der Ton wird dicker und runder. Der alternative Clipping Mode klingt ein wenig Organischer aber eher subtil, es wird ein wenig schöner. Hier bin ich jedoch noch nicht zu einem abschließenden "wann brauche ich das" gekommen. Kommt bestimmt noch. Ich habe allerdings auch den Op-Amp getauscht und muss sagen das der Unterschied doch recht deutlich ist. Der LM308 klingt weniger Modern (Organischer) aber irgendwie auch Runder und noch ein Tick mehr Schmelz in den Höhen. Zum Thema Amp-In-A-Box: Ich denke man sollte sich klar sein was man will, ein flexibles Pedalboard was vom Amp unabhängig ist oder ein Pedalboard was den Charakter des Amps "ergänzt". Ich habe mich für letzteres und somit bewusst (bisher) gegen Amp-In-A-Box Pedale entschieden. Die Rat war wohl mal also solches gebaut, kann aber nicht mit den modernen Monstern nicht mithalten. Als eigenständiges "Instrument" ist die Rat aber meiner Meinung nach der totale Bringer! Fazit: Viel Geld für so wenig Schaltung, Verarbeitung Top und mit optional erhältlichem LM308 Op-Amp alles möglich von Crunch bis Fuzz-Creme, dabei mit viel Schneid im Klang aber gleichzeitig "Transparent". Volltreffer für mich!
