So I finally put on my big-boy pants and upgraded my trusted old version of Reason to the newest Reason 12. I have always been a HUGE fan of the platform and since I discovered it in 2008, I never looked back at any other DAW's. The new installment has not disappointed me. For starters, the graphics have had a huge boost so you truly feel that the virtual racks are real. The sound quality has massively improved and the plethora of the new instruments and opportunities are overwhelming - yet this is still a platform you can approach whether you are a complete novice or a die-hard producer. The workflow is intuitive and works well. There are a few kinks, like loops playing a sample over your selection, when already selected, and sometimes finding the previously used folder can be complicated as the internal search function is always very good. These are minor nuisances...like being nibbled by sand fleas while on a beautiful tropical beach at sunset, mojito in your hand. With a rack crammed full of goodies, sequencer and mixer you truly, like never before, have a standalone studio (or plugin if you prefer other DAW's), that allows you to create world-class productions. So get going, don't hesitate.....worth every cent!

A needed update especially for HD graphics, Mimic sampler and updated combinator

R12 has some great new additions such as the Mimic sampler which lets me do more with vocals than ever before. In addition, the redesigned combinator is earlier to use and can provide macro controls to important parameters on the front panel. In addition the combinator can be customized in color and BG picture. I do not usually bother with this in my productions, as it takes time.
The other reason to upgrade is high res graphics, which is beneficial especially if your desktop resolution is > FHD. You can select the app zoom level and all of the Reason elements will increase in size.
I initially had issues with my ATI Firepro GPU incorrectly or not rendering some elements of the UI, but tech support provided me a workaround.
If you think of upgrading from R11 then this is not a huge update, still it may be worth it just for the UI alone. If upgrading from R10 like me, then it's almost a must, especially if the upgrade is offered at a lower price.
Overall I highly recommend R12 as a music production suite, which probably needs to have more features to be a complete DAW as well.

Great route to upgrade

This upgrade is just exactly the same as going via reason studios website. But saving you a lot of money too. The program authenticated immediately no problem. The program itself is a fantastic update and adds the amazing new combinators and the new mimic sampler and the awesome hi res/scalability to name a few .

Reason 12 - A great update with a few flaws

As Reason moved to a subscription based service with Reason+, they dropped what they started with Reason Suite. Meaning not all their own software instruments made it into the Reason 12 update. Friktion and Algoritm for instance have to be purchased separately. What is a great addition to the Reason Rack is the Combinator 2 which among others allows you to build your own MIDI Editors.

What definitely is a flaw for Mac users is the lack of VST3 plug-in support. If you are a big fan of Roland Cloud, Reason is pretty much useless for your if you run on a Mac.
