Poor sound card
I had an old 12-channel Yamaha mixer that was still working, but it had no digital output. I had to use an external sound card (a Tascam US-122). I can connect this new mixer directly to a PC for recording. However, in use I encountered two problems:
- the master volume level does not affect the digital output, only the analog outputs, which is not very practical. You have to manually adjust the volume of each channel when, for example, the overall level is too high;
- more importantly, the quality of the digital sound is poor, as I confirmed by comparing it with the sound obtained through the analog output and my external sound card.
In addition—although this was already the case with the old mixer—the effects are not of very good quality either, especially the reverbs, which are unusable for recording classical music, for example.
Therefore, for recordings involving more than two microphones, I recommend using an external sound card. In that case, the master volume control is active.
