I wanted to replace my amp's built-in digital reverb with something more advanced, yet reasonably priced. While not aiming for Strymon territory, I sought a decent unit offering some customizability without overwhelming options. As a blues player, a good Spring reverb was essential, along with decent Room/Hall/Plate reverbs for diversity. After considering several options, I discovered the Creamer. Here's a brief overview of the alternatives I explored:
TC HOF2: Initially appealing due to its reputation and TonePrint app compatibility. However, its higher price and reportedly weak spring reverb led me to pass.
TC HOF2 Mini: Considered for its simplicity, but ruled out for the same spring reverb limitations as its larger counterpart, and the fact that I don't want to bother with apps to switch and "beam" effect types.
EHX Holy Grail Nano / Neo: Praised for excellent spring emulation, but the single-knob control seemed too limiting, and offering too much reverb even at minimum setting.
JHS 3 Series Reverb: Great sound, but lacks true spring emulation, has only a general/room-like reverb.
Oceans 11: Too many options and a higher price tag. The Hall reverb sounded unnatural, and other modes were less convincing.
Oceans Pico 3-verb: Expected improvements over the Oceans 11, but still fell short in spring and room reverb quality.
The T-Rex Creamer delivers my desired three reverb types with impressive quality for its price. Despite Chinese assembly, the build quality is excellent, with a sturdy body and high-quality pots. Sound-wise, the Spring reverb has the twang and "boingy" character I sought. The Room setting genuinely conveys a smaller venue feel, while the Hall places you on a much larger stage.
The pedal offers sufficient settings to fine-tune blend and decay, plus a tone control to adjust the effect's character. A minor issue reported by some users is a slight boost when activated, but I find this negligible.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this reverb pedal. It's unfortunate that it doesn't receive more attention in the market.
