Extensive microtest!

WernerR, 12.01.2014
As a vocal acoustic trio (2 guitars, Cajon) we have looked after forever again after 2 new mics. The tests were extensive: SENNHEISER E 945, SHURE SM 58, SHURE BETA 58 A, NEUMANN KMS 105 BK, SENNHEISER E 965, SHURE KSM 9 HS. It was important to test us as unaffected as possible, that is, we did not know which micro we were recording, all the equalizer settings were neutral, so central! For the sake of the hurry, one of us chose the SENNHEISER E 965, the other for the NEUMANN KMS 105 BK.

Which micro one is of course synonymous taste and bad is none of the mics, nevertheless, there are already in the matters of transparency, resolution or feedback clearly audible differences. The first three following microphones are dynamic, the other condenser microphones. Here our experiences, from cheaply to more expensive sorted:

SHURE SM 58: The cheapest model and that is also to be heard. Overall, the least clear, low feedback. Clear close-up effect, so you have to get close to the micro, the closer, the more bass.

SHURE BETA 58 A: Already much better than the SM 58, but still a little bit occupied. Also much more dynamic. From the sound, the additional price to the SM 58 is absolutely worth, but most clearly for feedback. Clear close-up effect, so you have to get close to the micro, the closer, the more bass.

SENNHEISER E 945: The price / performance winner. Like the two 58s shure mics a dynamic. In my opinion, a whole class better than the BETA 58 A! Clearer, clearer and more comfortable in sound. It is powerful, but it does not cause any feedback. An absolute buying tip and a real alternative to the following, much more expensive condensate mixers. Less close-up effect, you have to get close to the micro, but the bass effect is much lower.

SENNHEISER E 965: Same attributes as the E 945, just a little clearer and even more transparent. Very impressive. Ultimately, one of us chose this micro. Low feedback. Hardly a close-up effect, you can calmly synonymous times piece away from the micro, the sound remains almost the same. It is also suitable for harp or other acoustic instruments, which are often interspersed.

NEUMANN KMS 105 BK: A great, the most transparent and natural sounding micro. Perhaps a small less powerful than the E 965th I have after several hearing tests on different days for this micro decided. Little susceptible to feedback. Virtually no close-up effect, you can also peacefully consume pieces away from the micro, the sound remains practically the same. Also suitable for harp or other acoustic instruments, which are often interspersed.

SHURE KSM 9 HS: Frankly something disappointing. From both of us testanger already at the beginning screened, which has us in hindsight itself very surprised. After all, we have often sung with the SM 58 and thought in advance rather that we would because of this listening habit again at Shure land. Clearly less transparent than the other two the Neumann or the E 965, is probably only for Shure fans. Together with the BETA 58 A, it is the most vulnerable to feedback.

Dynamic transporter!

chelijah, 14.11.2012
After 6 happy years with the Sennheiser E 935 I wanted to try something new. After several comparative tests of Dynamic and Condensatormicros, I'm finally back at Sennheiser and the E 945 landed. The Sennheisers simply sound the best for my voice. (Subjective opinion)
I play rock-pop folk-jazz-blues covers and stand on the stage just over 100 times a year on average. So the Micro must be very flexible. From shouting to filigree jazz, everything should be possible.
Well, it is. And indeed, unrestricted. But this is the E 935 too!
The E 945 transmits the heights somewhat shiny, silky, somehow higher-resolved and remains completely soft .... no shrill tones ... somehow a fair-color.
But the differences between these two mics are really not very big.
Meanwhile, I use so purely out of the gut feeling the E 935 at gigs where it is louder. (Music and audience) and the E 945 at gigs where the quieter, finer sounds are in demand.

Without any doubt, both are first-class microphones, in my opinion, the somewhat cheaper E935 with louder bands should be better ...
