A Swiss Army knife in my rack

Didier Pain, 08.06.2011
Bassist practicing and as often in the category of big strings, picky on sound, I had long sought such a product. My first experience, I realized it from a dbx 286a with some happiness. Yet I wanted more.

So why this little box nice with his VUmeter "vintage" in the middle? The correct amplification of a bass guitar (a Sandberg Basic Ken Taylor found in Thoto for me), is a matter of growl, grunt in the bass and grain in the mediums. So, first objective, to put in the amp head a signal well held and without (too much) breath. The Studio Channel is a slice of console with a comfortable gain input which satisfies me from the start. Need to mess a little? OK, it's possible, it's achievable. The second knob of the Presonus is a distortion dose lamp. On the bass, not too much is needed but everything is about taste: I admit to use it on certain tracks in groups but without excess because saturation is there and a little there when asked. I come to the two points that have packed me on this product.

First the compressor. Ah, the compressor ... I love it! A real mister-lady compressor, not toy, with the four settings for me indispensable: Threshold, ratio, attack time and release, all followed by a make up gain. And it's true happiness, what I expected to master a monstrous bass with seismic possibilities! In rehearsal as on stage, I have the control and this, whatever happens around me: a guitarist who climbs the curtains in stridulating like a bunch of angelic arpeggios. And the breath? What? What breath? No breath, me ...

A few buttons away, I access a parametric three-band sharp enough. Respect. This is the kind of bug that we must approach with a su-sugar under pain of doing a big anything (ca) catastrophic. An equalizer corrects, accentuates or tempers, even colors to the envy. And this parametric, which requires a little mastery, can really do everything. I will be tempted to say that we must just find the ears to use it and that, there is not too much in store! With the bass, I use it to moderate the character of the instrument in the style I play: no bass that dribbles the knees, a medium chouia for presence and a good reduction of string sounds and Frets. Each section is equipped with a frequency and gain control, except for the mediums which can be used in addition to the bandwidth (Q factor).

The Presonus Studio Channel is also not lacking comfortable things that we like to have, such as by-pass corrections and the ability to reverse the compressor-equalizer order in the processing chain.

For an instrument with passive electronics, an instrument input is provided on the front panel.
And this little oval VU meter very nice reacts very well, it is not only there to make pretty: it is useful!

The Studio Channel is therefore a good plan in another for the musician who can not find on his amp what to fulfill his expectations. He does the job and he does it well. After a few hours of practice, one feels wings and especially ideas on ways previously unexplored by ignorance.

It is also an interesting alternative, given its price, to more targeted and specific products of an instrument. Honestly, it's first of all the price / feature ratio that attracted me. I find it quite unbeatable. I appreciate being able to convert it if needed to another studio use. I am sure it has not ceased to amaze me.

What worries me the most? I have not yet found a fault. Yet there must be one or two, right?
