Old School Sound
CisFis, 22.11.2013
Since the Gut-a-likes so far only from the Slappern were correctly discovered, I would like to give as Jazzer an experience report. I've had a lot of experience with these strings, also with "Fat Black" and "Vintage", because I was a friend of the 50`s double bass jazz sound early on the problems of the gut strings, especially with the unpredictable voice behavior.
These strings live first and their sound unfolds only with a high string position, thus "high action", as was also customary in case of gut strings. This means: 13-14-14-12, and of course means increased practice for intonation and certain limitations in the virtuosity of play; For which a reward gradually develops a sound, which is currently not only close to the gut strings, but is also very special in its own way. Particularly, it is also the case that bassists are willing to learn to play by virtue of the sound.
When winding up, please remember that the strings must be tuned several days before they keep the mood. So only on the vortex some windings in the opposite direction, then cross, so that there is enough space and there are no entangling in the swivel box. Saitenkurbel the best to order at the same time. If you pull the E string out when you pull it up, pull it through the whirling hole, heat the end slightly with the lighter (care alcohol slack on the instrument) and press it with a pair of pliers, then it can no longer slip through the whirling hole.
I prefer the strings without the foam pads - just as the knot simply hang in the string holder, make me think that the attack is so better.
Especially the E-string needs some time and the high string position and needs to be spiked with 2 superimposed fingers. However, a wounded E-bowstring string is also recommended as a supplement. This is especially true for the "Didi Beck`s", where the D and G string with their lighter sound are very close to the gut D and G, but also in contrast to the E string.
The well-a-like`s are shocking and projecting far; In contrast to quietly played steel strings, complaints at night are practiced in the house guaranteed. For that one can (depending on the drummer) unreinforced in the bandkonkt well keep up.
The sound is far from the distance or on recordings completely different than next to the bass.

The price is second to none. A wounded nylon-E-string should be available, at least on the homepage of the manufacturer. When I started playing the double bass, I would not have thought that these simple strings would take me into their spell.

...as a matter of fact!

The strings really hold what they promise: they have the advantages, but also some disadvantages of bowel strings. I raised the strings on a second bass.

Whereupon the rewind causes some problems, the strings are quite re-spiked as to the threading. It is important to pull the strings regularly. This is recommended in the instruction manual which is included with the strings and the 5-year warranty against tears allows you to pull the strings up to the ceiling. The reason for this rough treatment is the tensioning of the knot of the strings held in the holder. This results in a faster stimulation stability. This was by the way reached after about 2 weeks, whereby I have spanned the strings again and again and left the bass.

The sound is quite smooth at the slap and the sustain somewhat short. The pizzicato is the sustain ok. Even bow play goes, whereby I have grinded the stroke. I find the E string a problem, this sounds a bit flat. There is a wrapped gut string for this set. But whether this is worthwhile I do not. In my case, I put a Presto Leicht E string in my test and found it to be good.
The strings are clearly not for those who want a dry bass sound with slap, as for example with Lee Rocker. Here, the friends of the classic sound are clearly addressed. Oh, even if the strings are not suitable for magnetic detachment. How bowel hold!

Resume: An interesting string to get a sound reminiscent of Jake Tullok, Willie Dixon and Bill Black. There is a tonal lack of pressure to get a tonic against a loud band. The acoustics sound is good for my taste.
The playability is also in order. In principle, the strings are like gut strings of the playability, the sound and even something of the haptic.
What is dispensed with is the maintenance effort for bowel strings and their sensitivity to temperature and weather fluctuations. As a cost-effective alternative quite recommendable.
