Clear, very stressed B sse and loud - comparison EV ND 76, EV N / D767, Shure Beta 58 A

04.10.2016
Comparison E-Voice ND 76, E-Voice N / D767, Shure Beta 58 A (Fast-reading will find a conclusion at the end of the evaluation)

The ND series of vocal microphones has been reissued by E-Voice in 2016. They solve the tried and tested series of N / Dx67 microphones. As a long-time fan of E-Voice microphones of the N / D series, I was curious about this successor. I've had three microphones to compare: the predecessor E-Voice N / D767, which is just significantly cheaper at Thomann, the new E-Voice ND 76 and the also quite new Shure Beta 58 A. All three are dynamic microphones With neodymium technology.

On the one hand we performed the sound comparison live with the stage system. On the other hand, I have all Mirkos? Flat? Recorded and normalized in the studio so as not to distract different sound levels from the sound properties.

E-Voice ND 76:
Processing: very solid processing. In contrast to its predecessor, the microphone handle is made of coated metal. For the predecessors of the N / Dx67 series, it is a plastic handle, which brittles after 15 years, but is available as a spare part. The ND76 makes a very robust and durable impression. The micro is called a "large diaphragm microphone" , This term is more classical with condenser microphones for the studio and also arouses sound expectations. A look inside, however, shows that the microcapsule is the same size as the predecessors. Well, it can hardly be any bigger, because it fills almost the whole diameter of the wire basket. The membrane is thus significantly larger than, for example, the Shure 58.
Loudness: First of all it is noticeable that this micro is much louder than the predecessor N / D767 and is already louder than the Shure. That means more? Air? On the controller and less noise.
Klangeimppression: E-Voice-Typically, this microphone offers brilliant highs and sounds more visibly to the Shure. Overall, it seems to react to Impule somewhat faster, as a singer has the feeling, the micro is? Somehow closer to it ?. The taste of this micro is the pronounced proximity effect. In the close-up discussion, the depths are clearly overburdened. For male voices this sounds very comfortable over the monitor, but overall the voice loses some clarity and intelligibility. Female voices give this effect more body, the voice sounds warmer and more comfortable, in combination with the clear heights of the E-Voice, the micro here has its strengths.
Grip sounds: Despite the metal grip, I do not seem more pronounced than the N / D767.
Poplaute: The biggest weakness of the microphone. It is clearly sensitive to plosive sounds, it pops clearly and more strongly than the two comparison microphones. The best figure in comparison makes the Shure Beta 58 A, which reacts very insensitive.

Brief summary of the two other mics:
The Shure Beta 58 A meets the Shure reputation as a vocal all-rounder. It sounds consistently very balanced, warm. In the highs, however, it shows slightly less presence than the E-Voice microphones. Very insensitive to pop sounds.

The N / D767 also offers a nice, balanced sound, with prominent highs. It's louder than the Shure, something more sensitive to pop sounds. The proximity effect is by no means as pronounced as the ND76.

Conclusion for the E-Voice ND 76:
High loudness, clear heights, pronounced bass in close-up discussion. For women's voices, which need the clarity in the heights and more body in the overall sound good, definitely worth a try. Whoever feels the stressed bass as disturbing, better reaches another Mirko.

In the end it is a question of taste. I was the Basslastigkeit and the pop sensitivity a bit too much and because of the more balanced overall sound and the currently much more favorable price, the choice for my singing (man, position baritone / tenor) fell on the EV N / D767.
