From the first range of high-flying

Olivier R., 19.05.2011
The DPA 4090 is a microphone of first range with DPA but you have in hand an already very professional microphone, which presages well on the possible continuation of their range of microphones.
Small in size it can easily be stored and placed discreetly on a stage or a TV tray.
Its reproduction is precise and fine, not missing serious frequencies for a small membrane.
Some may not like it because it does not color the plug and remains neutral, which is suitable for the classic.
Omnidirectional it is perfect for acoustic instruments, from the folk guitar to the symphonic orchestra, paired with a second identical microphone you are with an excellent AB couple able to capture everything in a theater, it has a great dynamics and withstands high pressures.
Without any breath it is to use with a preamp that will respect the cleanliness of the signal.

Test "DPA 4090" Small diaphragm microphone for recording with various acoustic guitars as a solo instrument

Francesco Slowdown, 27.07.2015
The microphone is delivered in a small plastic case.
In addition to the microphone, there is also a foam pop cover as well as a microphone
Simple microphone holder.

The microphone itself is also small and light and can be very precise due to its shape
Be aligned.

The sound of this microphone I judge as very good. It acts impulsively and sets the guitar very nicely in the scene. The basses do not come dull, but warm and clear.
The middle range sounds, sometimes with the classic guitar, a critical, not nasty. And the caves do not sound too sharp, especially with the Steel String Guitar.
I have a knowledge of the playing style, the characteristics of the guitar and the acoustic conditions of the recording room. Furthermore, the different positions of the microphones in front of the guitar, which determine the sound character of the recording, are taken into consideration. Under all these aspects, the DPA 4090 is a great microphone that belongs to the upper league. And for that it is reasonably priced, so very cheap.
If I could only choose between the DPA 4090 and the Neumann KM184, I would take the DPA 4090.
The latter reminds me of an ironed upper shirt: It changes very neatly, but makes for my terms not necessarily very characteristic shots.
Of course, when comparing these microphones, it should be borne in mind that the Neumann KM 184 has a renal characteristic, whereas DPA 4090 has a ball characteristic. The latter, of course, sounds somewhat fuller and more comprehensive (but you also need an absolutely quiet recording environment). However, I assume that the difference in the sound result is not only based essentially on the different directional characteristics. With the combination of these two microphones one can make very successful recordings. At the same time
I positioned, for example, the DPA 4090 in the area before the twelfth federation. Its property of recording the frequencies in a broad spectrum has a positive effect on the sound quality of the recording. Here there are warm basses and soft heights, which the microphone at this point very nicely captured. The Neumann KM 184 was in this recording on the line between the bridge and the rear body of the corpuscle. His ability to make the sound a bit slimmer also came into its own. Here, there are distinctive and gnarled mids, which give the guitar character and provide power for the sound, and this place made the KM 184 a good job.

If I am already comparing: The Neumann KM 184 showed also at another point one
Impressive performance: The subject of noise is needed with this microphone
Not to worry at all. This is unfortunately not the case with the DPA 4090. This microphone is in the critical range for quiet signals. Here everyone has to decide for themselves what is still acceptable. My opinion: Without this disadvantage, I would have decided to buy one or two microphones of the DPA 4090 type, because in recording with the classical guitar, as well as with recordings with the Western guitar played in the fingerstyle, this microphone acts as an excellent suitable transducer.
