There are many positive reviews of the at4021, check out Mike Jasper's article in Tape Op 2009. Most of the positive comments also apply to the at4022 (the omni version of the at4021). I record acoustic music only, and I need to record the natural sound, as clear and detailed as possible. For my purposes the at4022 is my go-to mic for an sd omni.
In addition to recording soloists or pairs, I sometimes record larger groups, and here again, the at4022 excels.
One reason I like this mic so much, is that I have had excellent results close micing instruments (avoiding proximity effect), but equally good results when positioned well back.

Acoustic Guitar: HEUREKA! *

MichiLuxusburg, 23.01.2018
* Ancient Greek: "I found it!"
Finally :-))) !

My saga:
So far I have recorded acoustic guitar analog.
Sennheiser MK4 for the Body (class! Highly recommended) and Audio Technica ATM450 on the Neck! The whole reinforced with RME Quadmic, then added to the Mackie and finally with an MP3 recorder. Fine !
But now one wants to ascend sometime. I ordered a Steinberg UR242 to digitally "recorden" in the future.
Yes, the Senneiser MK4 cuts a fine figure on the Steinberg and its built-in preamps, but my ATM450 did not have enough output here compared to the large-diaphragm. Again, the Quadmic before the UR242 switch brought improvement, but only to 80% and I wanted to keep the amount of hardware as small as possible.

So I was looking for a small-sized membrane, especially with more output or less noise.
- Beyerdynamic M201TG: as dyn. Micro overwhelmed, of course, although in tests so much touted as a guitar mic.
- Shure SM81 was obviously broken, went back
- Beyerdynamic MC930: On Steinberg UR242 with built-in beach / sea noise! No thanks ! No idea where the great reviews for guitar come from. Or the wrong device combination. What do I know ....!?
- Rode NT5: good (especially for the price!), But no better than my Audiotechnica ATM450.
- I did not want to afford a Schoeps or Neumann as an amateur

So I read a lot of reviews and did not really believe it, but: I FOUND IT!
Audio Technica AT 4022.
This great mic sounds amazingly transparent and balanced with both the classic guitar and fingerpicking with the western guitar! It's almost too good to be true! Because the output level is not the Sennheiser MK4, and the AT 4022 rushes just as little as this really good Gross-Membraner!
Nota bene: Recording with AT 4022 course only "in decent environment"! Because the ball characteristic takes up the entire room, here I agree with previous speakers! But if the room acoustics are right, you get a dream sound!

Which is the best and why I am so excited now:
The Steinberg UR242 is not bad with its built-in preamps, but for the price, these preamps are not a high-end. And yet, the AT4022 is synonymous with an acoustic guitar [which one must indeed make something more than a Sax ;-)] on the UR242 crystal clear and absolutely noise-free! I swear !!
So no additional high quality preamp upstream needed!

My suggestion: AT 4022 + Sennheiser MK4 + Steinberg UR242. Sounds to me in fact like a high-end studio for acoustic guitar and has a price still in the three-digit range. [Cubasis / Steinberg app for iPad was again 36 euros, but now habbich have a "high-end studio" that can go everywhere, because it fits in a laptop bag :-)))]

In summary: who wants to record acoustic guitar and extremely low noise (without a separate preamp to acquire) and a clear sound, for which there is nothing better than the AT 4022 in my opinion!
I have not had any, and I'm just an amateur, but from a Schoeps for 1000 to 2000 euros, I would expect such a sound as the AT 4022. The AT 4022 currently costs under Thomann under 400! You have to find it ;-)

PS I might have wanted to try a Sennheiser E914, but for me the search is definitely over :-) !! HEUREKA!
