Channelstrip of the upper class

Marcoustic, 17.09.2013
For a long time I thought about which channelstrip should enrich my studio.
The question was: tube or transe? Color or clean?
Since most tube devices sound "dirty" for many purposes, a device should be without a tube; But one has the own character.
The decision then fell when I heard that the 8801 would probably sound like the Neve VR's predecessors.

First the features, optics and haptics:

The first thing to notice is the high "button density". To the I had to get used to first. For people with slightly thicker grips this is not quite comfortable. Nevertheless, everything is beautiful and above all arranged nicely.

The highlights among the features are for me:
In addition to phase reverse and pad, there are high and low cuts, which are infinitely variable. I like that very much personally, because in my ears an analog low cut - especially in the range above 100 Hz - always sounds better, softer than a digital one. The filters can also be routed to the sidechain of the dynamic section.
Next highlight: Routing.
This is very flexible. This allows the dynamic section to sit in front of or behind the EQ, as well as the insert point can be selected freely. This is certainly not necessary every day, but definitely very fexibel.

Now to the most important: the sound (attention: flowery description).
It was tested with a Neumann TLM 67, a Brauner Phantom, a charteroak m900t and a versed musicalsängerin. The preamplifiers sound very slender in my ears; As I was accustomed to from the console.
The dynamic section is very unobtrusive. The compressor shows a slightly thickening character without too much application. Really notice it from about 6 - 10 db level reduction.
The EQ also behaves very pulttically:
Here, you can boldly go to the controllers and turn the gain far before you realize that something is happening in the frequency spectrum. So also the EQ falls under the category: Unobtrusive.

This may seem sober now, but the combination of preamp, compressor and EQ results in a sound image, which contrary to many other opinions in my ears does not sound modern, but rather timeless. Taut but rather reserved in the bass range, slim in the middle and very silky in the high tone spectrum.

All in all you can not expect a character, but just a device with a beautiful, inconspicuous sound.

Very good channel strip with small restrictions

50_1_50_Original, 03.01.2012
Since I am very impressed by the sound of the analog consoles of the manufacturer Neve, but I am missing the necessary small money for a complete console, I have invested in the channel strip. Also, this is not a bargain, but a cheaper alternative, in order to get to the estimated neve sound.
In advance, this is a first impression. As soon as I have tested the channel strip times, there is an update.

Service:
The Potis are already crowded on the front. Since you need partly already very slender fingers to use them. Otherwise clearly structured (input, filter, compressor / limiter / expander / gate functions, routing, EQ, output) and quite plain. After a short familiarization also problem-free to use.

Features:
The channel strip has everything you need for recordings. At this point the recall function should be recalled via the computer (after reset, the analog settings can be restored, ingenious), the freely selectable routing as well as the EQ.

Sound:
This is the sound, which I also know from the 88er desk and appreciate. Have so far only guitars tested, but the sound gets the certain something. Even the removal of an amplifier via the SPL transducer (simulated micro-signal into the line input of the 8801) experiences a more than clear appreciation. For a very good guitar sound independent of the style direction absolutely recommendable.
Vocals, bass and DI input follow then times in the update.

Processing:
The device is so far very solid built and meets my expectations.
However, there are a few deductions for the Potis and the accessories mMn.
All the poti except two have a lot of game. If you have adjusted to it, it goes so far from the operation. However, this should not happen in this price class.
With the accessories, however, I noticed the following negatively.
Since this device is exported from Neve to D, no (!) Plug is installed on the connection cable for the power supply. The end user may then connect the plug himself or else completely replace the cable if another cable with a cold plug is available.
The LA-610 comes from America and also has the appropriate cable included. Well
Also, no USB cable is included. Therefore you have to think of a fixed rack installation if you use the recall function. Want to use and just no suitable cable to the hand .....

Conclusion:
A worthwhile investment that brings the legendary Neve Sound to my DAW production environment. Outstanding sound and everything you need for recording. These are also the reasons why I keep the channel strip despite the small limitations of processing and accessories.

Supplement: As expected, no matter what microphone (Neumann, Sennheiser, Shure, etc), the signal is simply transferred to the hard drive in very high quality. Also the DI input to the recording of the bass I can win a lot of good in contrast to some test report. Paradediscipline, however, remains the recording of guitars.
