Channelstrip of the upper class

Marcoustic, 17.09.2013
For a long time I thought about which channelstrip should enrich my studio.
The question was: tube or transe? Color or clean?
Since most tube devices sound "dirty" for many purposes, a device should be without a tube; But one has the own character.
The decision then fell when I heard that the 8801 would probably sound like the Neve VR's predecessors.

First the features, optics and haptics:

The first thing to notice is the high "button density". To the I had to get used to first. For people with slightly thicker grips this is not quite comfortable. Nevertheless, everything is beautiful and above all arranged nicely.

The highlights among the features are for me:
In addition to phase reverse and pad, there are high and low cuts, which are infinitely variable. I like that very much personally, because in my ears an analog low cut - especially in the range above 100 Hz - always sounds better, softer than a digital one. The filters can also be routed to the sidechain of the dynamic section.
Next highlight: Routing.
This is very flexible. This allows the dynamic section to sit in front of or behind the EQ, as well as the insert point can be selected freely. This is certainly not necessary every day, but definitely very fexibel.

Now to the most important: the sound (attention: flowery description).
It was tested with a Neumann TLM 67, a Brauner Phantom, a charteroak m900t and a versed musicalsängerin. The preamplifiers sound very slender in my ears; As I was accustomed to from the console.
The dynamic section is very unobtrusive. The compressor shows a slightly thickening character without too much application. Really notice it from about 6 - 10 db level reduction.
The EQ also behaves very pulttically:
Here, you can boldly go to the controllers and turn the gain far before you realize that something is happening in the frequency spectrum. So also the EQ falls under the category: Unobtrusive.

This may seem sober now, but the combination of preamp, compressor and EQ results in a sound image, which contrary to many other opinions in my ears does not sound modern, but rather timeless. Taut but rather reserved in the bass range, slim in the middle and very silky in the high tone spectrum.

All in all you can not expect a character, but just a device with a beautiful, inconspicuous sound.

R. Neve's creative highlight - only fumbling, unclear operation

Schnalfi, 09.09.2018
The sound of the strip is beyond reproach.

The range of functions has no other strip to my knowledge.
The preamp is absolutely mega, the EQ too. The compressor works very clean and pleasant (but requires training period, is not so intuitive). Once you've set the expander (not the gate!), That's a very cool feature. Although I would like to have had the opportunity, the gate / expander by one-click off, or zuzuschalten (as with the other units) and not just by turning in or out the buttons.

The main mumbo for me really the fiddly service.
Another negative point is that you can only read the part in bad light (with the dazzling LEDs), if you provide neat backlight, otherwise you have no chance. Especially since the pots are very tight and the color contrasts are still weak.

The Shelford Channel, equipped with a few "gimmick buttons" (Silk, Blend), can not give the 8801 a sound rich in water (at least preamp & EQ), but it beats the 8801 in terms of clarity and value of the pots.

If I compare it already, I would just pretend to say that RNeve was at the height of his creative power in the development of the 88 console - and out of that the 8801 is 'taken'.
