I ordered this mic to upgrade my Rode NT1-A. I've had it for about a year now and let me tell you:
- This mic shines on vocals. I've used it most on pop and rap vocals, but I'd imagine it would handle any vocalist without a problem. Compared to Rode NT1-A's harsh sibilants, this is smooth and silky.
I've used it on acoustic guitar, and there it works really well too. It captures the body very well, and the high end is again smooth.
It's not transparent, so do not expect a C414-style sound out of this. But the overall sound is very natural in a way, I think the midrange is very detailed. Although it's not the brightest mic on the market, with an EQ you can boost the sh*t out of the treble range of this and it still sounds good.
I've yet to try it out on a kick drum. The U47 FET (which this is based on) is famous for micing the kick drum from the outside, and I'm still curious if this will perform well in this situation. I suspect it will handle it well.
I really like the fact that there are the options for different polar patterns, as well as a pad and a low cut. These really open up the possibilities this mic can be used for.
The build quality is great. It feels like a heavy-duty mic, and it looks fabulous. The shock mount is solid and sturdy.
After a year of use I literally have nothing negative to say. This mic could be three times the price and I'd believe it. A fantastic product – you've done it, Warm Audio.
