Poor quality control
MannyF 21.04.2023
I was very excited when the RME rackmount kit finally arrived, but my excitement quickly turned to disappointment as soon as unboxed and inspected the product. Whilst the brackets admittedly are generously sized and feel very sturdy in the hand, the quality control was unsatisfactory. The extruded aluminium pieces were not deburred after cutting, resulting in edges with razor-sharp burrs (Google that) all around, both brackets. Deburring a small piece of aluminium is a simple process that can be performed by an operator with minimal training using a small, inexpensive deburring hand tool (although ideally CNC should be used). In this case, the manufacturere skipped this important step. I have reported the problem to RME and they told me the samples they had with them didn't have any burrs, although they would inform their manufacturer, so hopefully they will improve the quality control.

The old Fireface 400/800 brackets were of a much higher quality and exquisite finish. I suspect I'm the first customer to report this because people in 2023 assume bad quality is normal, but RME is a premium brand and surely the manufacturer knows what deburring is. It's the manufacturer's job —not the end user's— to effect quality control measures, especially at this price point.

I'm still a big fan of RME products in terms of reliablility, but RME's quality control is lacking. This is not the first product I've had trouble with. Pretty much ever RME product I have purchased had some build-quality problem, some very embarrassing. Maybe RME will take my feedback seriously and fix these problems for future batches... who knows. I have asked RME directly if they would be able to supply a replacement without the burrs hand-picked by them, but they suggested I should ask Thomann for a replacement, which I will do, but I am not sure the replacement will be any better. If the replacement fails to deliver on quality, I'll have to come up with a different way to secure my UCX II to my rack

tl;dr: I fell like I paid €45 for a €10 piece of metal.
