A high-performance USB audio interface

The Fireface UFX III is a high-quality audio interface that represents the third generation of RME's flagship model and includes a range of complex routing options as well as internal DSP effects such as EQ, compression, and reverb. This interface is the first to support USB 3.0 (class compliant), and users thus have access to all 94 inputs and outputs without the need for driver installation. The front panel features four high-performance Neutrik inputs in a combined XLR/TRS format for microphone and instrument signals (such as electric guitars). The Fireface UFX III can be integrated into any audio network via its ADAT, AES, and SPDIF connections, and the integrated DURec (direct USB recording) technology allows recordings to be made directly to a USB stick without using a computer, all of which makes this a flexible and high-performance audio interface that is especially suitable for professional live and studio applications.

Flexible routing options

In addition to its four combo sockets, which have a gain range of 75dB each, the front panel of the RME Fireface UFX III also houses a MIDI input and MIDI output, both in five-pole DIN socket format, as well as two low-impedance headphone outputs. The device's high-resolution TFT display, which also provides precise information as to the channel gain level at all times, is located on the right of the front panel and provides access to all of the various settings. The different menus can be called up using the four quick select buttons to the right of the volume dial, and both setting adjustments and complex routing can be carried out via the TotalMix software. The rear panel of the Fireface UFX III in turn is home to eight balanced line-level inputs and eight balanced line-level outputs (all in 6.3mm jack format), an AES/EBU input/output, two ADAT inputs and outputs, an additional MIDI input and MIDI output, and an input and output for word clock signals, all of which makes this interface ideally equipped for virtually any recording situation.

Wireless control on demand

The RME Fireface UFX III, which supports sample rates of up to 192kHz and employs RME's proprietary Steady Clock FS technology for maximum jitter suppression, is a suitable choice for anyone looking for a high-quality and professional solution for recording and monitoring. Thanks to its in-built DSP chip, the Fireface UFX III also helps to optimise both recording and monitoring through the use of equalisers and dynamic processors, and the interface can be operated via PC or Mac using the RME TotalMix software or via an iPad with the RME TotalMix FX app. Wireless operation is also possible, however, using an optional ARC USB remote control - perfect for live applications and studio sessions where the musicians pull double duty as sound engineers.

About RME

RME is a brand of Audio AG based in Haimhausen near Munich, Germany. It enjoys a worldwide reputation and is especially known for offering support for all users of any platform thanks to cross-platform connectivity between Windows and Mac OS via various interface formats. An extensive repertoire of audio interfaces, converters and microphone preamps, all based on innovative and extremely powerful core technologies, offer optimum performance to all RME users. This explains why RME's devices are used in a wide range of applications all over the world. From recording studios and theatres to broadcasting companies and scientific institutions, many users rely on the quality of RME products.

Complex routing made easy

The RME Fireface UFX III's USB 3.0 interface allows data to be directly recorded to and played back from a USB stick, and users who wish to integrate the interface into a fixed installation can also transfer multi-channel data from a DVD player using the SPDIF connection (when the "SPDIF Out" option is selected in the interface's menu, the software will transfer the non-decoded digital multi-channel data stream to the Fireface UFX III). The TotalMix software can be used to route signals to the interface's physical outputs if desired, and the user can also create independent bus mixes for the purpose of complex signal routing and headphone monitoring. The Fireface UFX III's Auto Level function, which automatically determines the optimum input gain level, will prove immensely helpful here. Those who wish to can also go a step further can do so with RME's DIGICheck software for Mac and Windows, which allows the precise analysis of audio data streams.

THE interface
jakeonfiree 25.01.2025
I've had this for a few months now. While I haven't been able to try out every little thing I can do, it's a great interface for a wildly great price here at Thomann. The conversion is noticeably better than my Apollo Twin X was, both listening via headphones and my studio monitors. The options for expansion are wonderful too. I'm slowly getting my head around Totalmix, but I've already found it to be great for routing with outboard gear. More mic preamps would be nice at this price point, but you can only fit so much in a 1U chassis.

S
everything I expected and more
Sparrq 19.06.2025
The RME UFX III is simply outstanding. Rock-solid drivers, ultra-low latency, and total stability — just what you'd expect from RME. TotalMix FX is incredibly powerful once you get the hang of it, and the routing flexibility is unmatched. The build quality feels premium, and the front panel display is surprisingly useful for quick monitoring.

Coming from other interfaces, the clarity and detail in the converters are immediately noticeable. USB 3.0 performance on my Mac has been flawless so far, even with high track counts and multiple plugins. I paired it with a Ferrofish Pulse 16 MX over ADAT, and the integration was seamless.

This interface is an investment, but for a serious studio setup, it's worth every cent. Zero regrets.
