PLEK Service

Our aim was to have a machine that had the best tools to enable personalised set-ups for electric guitars, acoustic guitars and basses. The computer controlled PLEK machine measures and processes guitars under string tension (under real playing conditions) and allows for a perfect alignment of frets and saddle as well as string positioning. The PLEK machine often saves you having to re-fret your instrument which can be costly and time consuming.
Besides the sound, good playability is undoubtedly an important criteria. But what happens when your guitar doesn’t play as easily as at the beginning? The most common reasons are worn out frets, uneven saddle or fretboard and poor adjustment of neck relief and string height. Our Guitar Service Team is here to help. The team works in a modern and fully equipped guitar studio in our new Service Centre and has a state of the art spray booth and PLEK machine to meet our customers' needs.

Which instruments can be PLEK'd?

The PLEK machine is suitable for every plucked instrument with metal frets and can be adjusted individually. In addition to electric guitars, acoustic guitars and basses, it works with mandolins, 6-stringed banjos and resonator guitars.

The optimal string action

"As low as possible, but without extra string noise": This sentence is common with most guitarists. Since every guitarist has his or her own way of playing, the optimal string action can be extremely different from one to another. The PLEK machine recognises and fixes the unevenness in each fret with a tolerance of 0,01 mm, so the string will not make any noise with low settings or even kill the tone. In close consultation with you, our team optimises the string action and playability of your instrument.

Is it worth it?

The value of your instrument is not determined just by the purchase price. An instrument cherished for many years can be brought back to life and a new instrument can be improved with the help of our PLEK service. If the instrument sounds good, the hardware is solid and above all: if you love playing your instrument, you should send it here to be PLEK’d!

What's the best way to deliver your instrument to Musikhaus Thomann?

You can send it by post or a courier of your choice. It is important you inform us before shipping your instrument so we can make the necessary arrangements.

Advice about shipping: loosen the string tension on the instrument and pack it very carefully in its case (ideally a hard case). Please make sure that loose parts (eg loose bridge) are not inside the main compartment. Shim the headstock with soft material (eg newspaper or foam) and put the case inside a suitable box.

How long does it take before you get your instrument back?

In general, our team needs three working days (shipping not included) to PLEK the instrument and to make the desired set-up.
