Perfect mic for acoustic
13.10.2016
I bought these mikes mainly for use on solo acoustic guitar. They are extremely sensitive and have absolutely no self-noise. They have cardioid pattern and with some work on positioning you'll get great results, but if you record in the room with poor sound isolation, they'll still pick up ambient noises in the background (like street noise through windows, or rain pouring), it's very low, but audible in recordings of soft and slow solo pieces played in high volume, so think about some room threatment if you recording at home.
Pros: The sound is clean and transparent. Slight high-end lift adds nice airiness, which is trademark of KM184. If you're looking for clean, crisp and bright sound - these are for you. Even through cheap interface the sound is crystal clean, but you'd want to plug these mikes into something more expensive for more warmth and detail.
Cons: none, but make sure that every piece of equipment in your chain (instrument, preamps, room) is on the same level of quality, so you'll get maximum results.
They come in the pretty wooden box which is packaged in another cardboard box. Stand joints are a bit stiff and can leave scratches.

Balanced and honest
CLR Records, 28.10.2009
I have been doing music for over 15 years now, mainly recording acoustic instruments. These include: guitar, piano, percussion and wind instruments.

When I first tried the Neumann microphones I was initially a little disappointed. The difference to cheaper products was not so great in my ears at first. But then, during the next recording, my opinion changed quite quickly.

The advantage with these microphones is clearly that they really represent what you hear. This means, of course, that the sound source and the room must be very good !! Furthermore, one should not neglect the off-axis discoloration, which is as good as not present at these microphones. This results in a microphone, which is very easy to use and always delivers an honest sound. Moreover, it simply sounds round and very pleasant in the heights. This difference can be heard clearly in the mix, where other manufacturers draw a very sharp and also artificial sound due to exaggerated heights.

My conclusion:
Those who have set themselves the goal to make recordings that should sound really professional will hardly be able to handle the investment for a pair of Neumann KM184s. However, one should not forget that the correspondingly good sound source and an acoustically optimized room must first be present. I also recommend the KM 184 for singing. With a reasonable pop killer and a certain distance (small diaphragm microphones are very pop-sensitive!) This microfiber should loosely beat many large diaphragm microphones.
