Works well but mind the quirks!

The decay envelope works great. It retriggers in a musical way (not all envelopes do that). I have only one gripe: The attack is supposed to be snappy, but I think it’s a bit TOO short. It makes my VCAs ”click” in an unpleasent way. I have solved this by patching a simple low pass filter on the output - just a capacitor and a resistor, I already had built this for patching gates directly to a VCA. For drum sounds this is propably not a problem at all, but I’m using this module for softer sounds.

The gate output is a different story. Yes, it can be used for some nice rhytmic variations. But the gate signal is not clean. In some settings it makes my sequencer jump two steps! Unfortenuately I don’t have access to a scope, but it’s clear that there is a rather unusual transient on the gate output.

Conclusion: This is a beast you have to tame! Unless you like clicks and skipped sequencer steps - then you will do fine with it as is. :)

Essential for custom drum sounds

This decay-only envelope generator is great for TB-303 style filter sweeps, and absolutely essential for percussive sounds. As the decay time can be affected by a CV input, you can, for instance, make the note's velocity dictate the length of certain aspects of its sound. If you want to wire up your own drum patches, it's time to stock up on A-142s.

The only downside is that it doesn't pay attention to the gate signal on the system bus, but that's what the A-185-1's extra gate outputs are for.

VC Decay

Ein EG mit nur einem Parameter erscheint erst mal nicht besonders zu sein und weckt allenfalls Assoziationen zur TB-303. Beim A-142 ist dieser Parameter Decay jedoch spannungs-steuerbar, wodurch mehr Bewegung in den Sound kommt. In Verbindung mit einem Inverter (A-175) ist es dann z.B. auch möglich, mit steigender Velocity die Decay-Zeit zu verkürzen. Zusätzlich wird noch ein Gate sowie ein invertiertes Gate erzeugt, um beispielsweise andere EGs anzusteuern. Dadurch wird das A-142 auch zur Alternative zu deutlich teureren VC-ADSRs.

Die Sequenzen erwachen zum Leben

In Kombination mit dem A-155 Sequencer sind wesentlich dynamischere Sequenzen realisierbar. Es sind natürlich noch wesentlich mehr Anwendungen denkbar, aber die gilt es für mich noch zu erforschen.

Die Bedienung ist selbsterklärend und die Verarbeitung Doepfer-typisch gut. Der Funktionsumfang hält sich in Grenzen, aber das, was das Modul leisten soll macht es einwandfrei.

Ich finde es manchmal etwas frickelig in Abstimmung mit den Parametern anderer Module ist die richtigen Einstellungen für den gewünschten Sound zu finden, aber das liegt wohl mehr an mir selber, bzw. ist eine Eigenheit beim arbeiten mit Modularsystemen.

Insgesamt ist es eine echte Bereicherung für mein System und ist in Kombination mit dem A-155 in Dauernutzung!
