Digital mixer, analogue workflow
The Zoom LiveTrak L12next is the successor to the L-12, building on an established concept with a clear design priority: full mixing, recording, and monitoring in a single self-contained unit, without requiring a computer. Where many compact digital mixers bury key parameters in menus, the L12next keeps the workflow hardware-first – physical faders and encoders for every channel, direct control of gain, EQ, compression, and effects sends, and an OLED display for onboard editing and scene management. Eight combination XLR/jack inputs with mic preamps handle the front-end, with five independent monitor outputs supporting individual mixes for the full band. iPad control via the L12next app extends the workflow to FOH or stage positions without adding hardware.
Hands-on live control
The L12next records up to 14 tracks simultaneously – 12 discrete channels plus a stereo mix – either to SD card or directly to a computer via USB-C, at up to 24-bit/96kHz, with the master simultaneously captured in 32-bit float for headroom against unexpected peaks. Overdub, mixdown, and auto-punch are all handled onboard via the OLED display, keeping the recording process independent of a DAW. The eight combo inputs include switchable 48V phantom power across all channels; channels 1 and 2 add Hi-Z switching for direct instrument recording, while channels 3-8 carry a -20dB pad for high-output sources. Encoders address gain, three-band EQ, compression, or effect sends via function switches, with LED rings showing parameter positions and signal levels in real time.
For bands and content creators
The L12next suits two distinct working contexts. For bands and live performers, the five independent monitor paths are the core proposition – each musician gets a dedicated mix, delivered in stereo for IEM systems or mono for traditional stage monitors, without compromising the main FOH output. For multi-participant podcast productions, live streams, and broadcast setups, the L12next functions as a standalone hub: Multiple microphones, playback sources, and external signals can be managed from a single unit, with simultaneous recording to SD card and computer via USB-C. The 14-input USB-C interface feeds directly into any recording application or streaming platform without additional routing hardware.
About Zoom
Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.
Control, recall, and monitoring
All physical settings save as scenes and restore instantly – a practical advantage for recurring live setups, multi-act events, or regular podcast configurations where repeating the same gain structure quickly matters. Sixteen onboard reverb and delay effects cover the most common live and recording treatments, adjustable directly from the front panel. The integrated talkback microphone keeps communication open during soundchecks and rehearsals without a separate circuit. Multiple monitor paths run in parallel – IEM and stage monitor feeds can coexist within the same show – and the combination of scene recall, independent monitoring, and onboard effects keeps the L12next operational as a standalone unit even when the iPad isn't in the room.
In the spotlight
L12next Control App
The L12next Control app for iPad mirrors the full front-panel workflow remotely – faders, EQ, effects, and scene selection all accessible from the FOH position, the audience, or the stage itself. The USB-C interface runs 14 inputs and 4 outputs at up to 24-bit/96kHz, allowing simultaneous recording to both computer and SD card – live takes backed up in parallel, or a clean multitrack sent to the DAW while the SD card captures a safety copy. DAW transport and basic remote control functions are also available directly from the mixer's front panel, keeping the workflow bidirectional.
