Compact mixer-recorder with OLED and AI
The Zoom LiveTrak L6max builds on the LiveTrak L-6's compact all-in-one architecture, with four combo XLR/TRS inputs – two with Hi-Z switching for direct guitar and bass – alongside an OLED display, AI noise reduction, and a dedicated bounce track for unlimited overdubbing. Up to 14 tracks record simultaneously to microSD at 48kHz/32-bit float, enabling standalone recording without a laptop and allowing levels to be adjusted after the fact without clipping. The dual A/D converters on channels 1 to 4 can already handle extreme dynamics without gain adjustment. The unit measures 284×114×47mm and weighs 673g without batteries – slightly larger than the L-6 but still compact enough for rehearsal bags and location kits.
Encoder-based channel control
The four combo XLR/TRS inputs on the L6max include two Hi-Z connections for direct instrument use. Four stereo line channels bring the total to 12; two of them can also function as dual mono channels, while the remaining two operate as USB audio returns for routing signals from a computer straight into the mixer: They all have a -20dB pad for high-output sources such as vintage synthesizers and Eurorack modules. Each channel carries 3-band EQ with a variable midrange, and the OLED display handles scene management, project navigation, and parameter editing from the front panel. Six onboard send effects cover reverb, delay, and echo, with tap tempo for delay timing. AI noise reduction processes incoming signals to reduce hum, hiss, and background noise without affecting the primary source.
Compact multitrack recording
The LiveTrak L6max suits solo musicians, small bands, and content creators who need a compact but capable production hub for recording, rehearsal, and streaming. The bounce track allows unlimited overdubbing. Mix down active tracks to the bounce track, freeing channels for additional layers – if the result doesn't work, undo will restore the previous state, while the original individual tracks remain on the SD card for later mixing. A master bus compressor can add punch and density to the main output without affecting the multitrack recording. The four scene memories store complete mixer configurations for instant recall. The optional ERL-6 adapter allows Eurorack installation for modular setups.
About Zoom
Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.
Scenes, pads and monitor mix
The Zoom LiveTral L6max has two independent headphone outputs that support separate monitor mixes – the Sub-Out delivers a customisable mix independently of the main output, useful for in-ear monitoring or a second performer's feed during rehearsal or recording. Signal tap points are selectable as pre-fader, pre-fader/post-comp, or post-fader per channel, giving precise control over what each output receives. Four sound pads trigger samples or loops with MIDI clock sync for live electronic use. Power runs via USB bus, AA batteries, or an external battery pack – battery life is approximately 1.5 hours on alkaline cells, 2.5 hours on NiMH, and 5 hours on lithium. The shorter alkaline runtime compared to the L-6 is worth noting for extended location use; lithium batteries are the practical choice for longer sessions away from mains power.
In the spotlight
L6 Editor App
The Zoom LiveTrak L6max can be configured via the L6 Editor app for Mac and Windows, where recording modes, battery type, sound pads, tap points, effects and MIDI assignments are adjusted through a structured and clearly organised menu system, allowing adaptation to different working scenarios. It also operates as a USB-C audio interface, providing 14 inputs and 4 outputs at up to 32-bit/48kHz resolution, which enables multi-channel recording and playback within a computer-based workflow. This makes integration into existing production environments straightforward, as multiple audio signals can be processed in parallel while remaining within a DAW setup.
