You can use the microphone with the Apollo Unison stereo pre-amp or with any other outboard stereo pre-amp. The cleaner your preamp settings - the more you will hear the modelling differences once the plugins are switched on. To me, the best way to use the Sphere is to record vocals/instruments without the modelling plugins.
Record clean and then go through all the available microphone models at a later stage.
For vocals it is great to listen to the raw mix of your song and switch through the different mic models. You may end up with a SM57 for the verse vocals and U47 vor the chorus etc vocals. ...
Do the models sound like the originals? To my ears some models come very close to the originals. I hardly could tell the difference between my U67 Reissue and the U67 Sphere...
This is a convincing technology/product with a great future ahead.

Der Spieltrieb wird durch die zahlreichen Features der Software auf jeden Fall schon mal geweckt. Die Optionen sind mächtig. Allerdings lässt der Sound dann doch am Ende zu wünschen übrig. All die tollen Emulationen klingen (bis auf Bändchen und Stäbchen) fast identisch in der Grundausstattung. Erst wenn man noch mal 500€ drauf legt für Putnam und Ocean Way Models kommt etwas Feeling alter und edler Mikros auf. Die euphorischen Bewertungen auf Basis der Basisausstattung rechne ich einmal der Psychoakustik zu, denn die Grafik ist wirklich lecker geraten. Was auffällt: wenn das Plugin in Console Software betrieben wird ist das Ergebnis zumindest ansehnlich. Nutzt man es aber in der hauseigenen "LUNA" DAW ist der ganze Zauber dahin. Das nenne ich tatsächlich minderwertig. Und das ist meine Haupt-Daw. Daher ist das Ding nutzlos für mich. Ich kenne viele der Mikros aus der Praxis und erkenne sie beim DLX nicht wirklich wieder. Wie immer ist das Marketing bei UAD überragend - doch hier passt für mich das Ergebnis einfach nicht. Mit ein, zwei anständigen Mikros wie 414 B-ULS oder selbst TLM 103 etc. steigt man klanglich deutlich höherwertig aus. Und man ist ungebunden von Updates und Betriebssystemen.
Schade - war viel versprechend. Am Ende ist gut gemeint das Gegenteil von gut!
Edit: Jetzt hab ich ihm eine zweite Chance gegeben... und mag es noch immer nicht. Die Kapsel ist ein China Billigteil (797 Cy002) und so klingt es auch - allen Faxen zum Trotz. Dazu eine Platine voll SMD um das Ding halbwegs gerade zu ziehen. Im Prinzip innen nichts anderes als im 100€ China Kondenser. Das Hochwertigste ist das Gehäuse. Und das ist so schwer, das es 80% der Mikroständer in die Knie zwingt. Ich bleibe dabei -> ein anständiger Allrounder mit hochwertigem Preamp und man braucht das fancy Zeugs nicht. Gar nicht.
