Many features, favorable price

I was looking for a USB interface to import the electric guitar into various backing tracks. Where digital outputs are present, for example on my old multitracker (optically) or on my multi-effects device (coaxial), I want to use them to keep the number of AD / DA conversions as low as possible. In addition, I want to be able to play in stereo in order to exploit the sound possibilities of the digital multieffect. The product comparison with Thomann's USB interfaces showed in the price class around 200, -¤ that only the U-44 is equipped with optical and coaxial inputs and outputs, otherwise it seems to me technically equal to the competitors.
The housing is made of plastic and hardly a roadtauglich, deserves no designer price, is however for the house use probably sufficiently stable. Unfortunately, you can not unscrew it, so it probably lands in the garbage, if it has a defect, something is not sustainable economy. For me, the connections and the operation from above, the "studio" consisting of interface and notebook, should remain mobile and not fixed in the rack. The gain controls I find something too small, the tiny digits on it can hardly be seen, the light, which shine red when overdriven, are also tiny. Since I do not have to go to the limit in digital recordings, unlike tapes, I can live with them. The U-44 it is for Podcasting etc. upgradeable, which I (but still) not need. After a few days of testing the U-44 with Audacity and Reaper as recording software, I can say everything works as it should, no strange noise, latencies I no longer hear after I downloaded ASIO drivers and for recording and Play the sound card of the U-44. The power supply via USB works, otherwise you have the U-44- in contrast to the competitors- the possibility of battery or power supply operation. The headphone output also offers enough volume via the USB power supply. Initial adjustment problems with the software I could with John from the Thomann hotline clarify, which has advised me competently and friendly.
Conclusion:
- Small defects in the processing and usability,
- not easy to repair,
+ Very good facilities,
+ Does what it should,
+ Is cheap.

Sorry saver for digital

SoundKlang, 13.12.2017
Difficult decision: If relative to the price, then probably very good. On the other hand measured by (not only, but also subjective) listening pleasure ...

Therefore, the first step: The digital interface of the device behaves as expected. Simply wire the SPDIF OUT / IN in the Operation Mode (USB) "Audio Interface". Loading and retrieving the digital signals requires (!) Under Windows the (Asio!) Driver installation, since it is taken over as usual from the (Asio-compatible!) Recording solution. So actually very good. A cheap digital interface for notebook, tablet or similar (not only, but also), whose SPDIF input in my setup and double sample rate even "understood" the AES Out of the AD conversion (using a passive AES to SPDIF converter). And yes, you can also monitor the signal at the digital input via direct monitoring - so that latency is unnecessary for my work. The only limitations in this mode were:
1) The device has always synchronized itself (and thus also its SPDIF output) with the clock of a signal at the SPDIF input, ie the SPDIF output of the device can not then specify the reference clock.
2) Not only the change of Operation Mode, but also the reconnection (ie interruption) of the SPDIF input may require a restart of the device. Probably the recording solution will then need a reboot to properly integrate the "new" turned on device.

In addition to the digital interface, the device is loaded with other features that may be significant in other usage scenarios and therefore should also be evaluated:

The headphone amplifier is not bad, even with prolonged listening. He sounds somehow crisp and acts directly. In direct comparison, however, there is a lack of front-to-back depth and also the left-right is less spatial with a tendency towards two-dimensionality.

The converters (all at double sample rate) also sound bad. A conversion DA> analogue line cable> AD comes amazingly close to the original. Just listening, the analog output (Main Out) or the analog input (Input 1/2, even before the gain 1/2) went to light saturation at higher signal levels. There was more transparency at lower signal levels and correspondingly higher gain 1/2. Also in the DA / AD conversion again tends to be a "crisp" sound with slight loss of space. Everything sounds a bit farther away than the original.

A similar impression with the microphone / preamps. Preliminary: Even with battery operation, phantom power was enough for a microphone with a relatively high power requirement. Michael Jackson's "Working Day and Night" is pleasantly implemented, nothing seems to be missing, the hall can be heard well and in the background plays the glass / percussion. Unlike with a dedicated microphone preamp whose line output goes to input 1 and thus also via the AD conversion of the device: the reverb is detailed, but is less noticeable, everything seems a bit more lively and in the very fast Glaspercussion the individual attacks are recorded. In comparison, the microphone / preamps of the device do not deliver bad-sounding results, which, as usual, remain a bit more enigmatic. The test with an external, dedicated microphone preamp once again resulted in a more transparent sound with a lower line input level and higher gain1 on the device.

Use as a standalone DA converter (eg for monitoring): In direct comparison, the device delivered less deep bass and slightly less details than a consumer electronics DA from the Far East for 0.2 times the price. A Professional Audio DA from the US East Coast for just 3.5 times the price delivers much more defined, airy bass, defined heights (eg cymbals) and above all a sense of hearing, as if one were more "in space" and less "before the canvas ".

So: The analog part including the conversion from / to digital is more than useful. But space and naturalness are lost in every stage. Still, it sounds so good (or not bad) that you get used to it quickly and then you do not notice it. It is probably the price range, the usability as a USB interface and the freedom of choice of the power supply (eg external USB battery or internal batteries or batteries) to consider. For high standards (eg classical, jazz, acoustics, vocals, etc.) seems to me personally the SPDIF interface of the device already suitable. For project, demo and other preliminary work, I would also have little concern with regard to the analog part and the converter.
