Four channels of great sound

The Zoom M4 MicTrak is a four-track field recorder combining a stereo X/Y capsule array with two XLR/TRS combo inputs, built around the same F-series preamp circuit used in Zoom's professional field recorder range. The internal mics record stereo at up to 192kHz – the widest sample rate in the MicTrak series – while the external inputs handle microphones, line sources, or direct feeds from a mixing desk, with phantom power available at +24V or +48V. The 32-bit float recording engine manages up to 135dB SPL without gain adjustment, with dual A/D converters on the external inputs achieving an EIN of -127dBu. A built-in timecode generator at ±0.2ppm precision supports professional video sync workflows. At 325g including batteries and 70×206×47mm, it is the most capable and most substantial recorder in the MicTrak range.

Zoom M4 MicTrak controls

32-bit floating point

The 1.54" colour LCD displays real-time waveforms for all four tracks simultaneously. A six-second pre-record buffer captures audio before the record button is pressed – useful for unexpected starts on set. The lo-cut filter reduces low-frequency handling and wind noise; buttons 1 and 2 switch the display between input channels for monitoring control. Transport controls handle recording, playback, and navigation of up to 99 markers for quick location of key passages. The 3.5mm stereo mini-jack input accepts plug-in power sources including lavalier microphones, while the 3.5mm line output feeds a decoded stereo signal to the camera for a backup sync track. A 1/4" tripod socket on the base allows direct mounting on camera tripods and standard mic stands.

For filmmakers and field recorders

The M4 suits videographers and field recordists who need more than a stereo recorder – specifically those combining on-camera ambient capture with separately miked dialogue, instruments, or direct feeds from a FOH desk. The F-series preamp heritage gives the external inputs genuinely professional performance, and the timecode generator allows the M4 to serve as the audio master clock in multi-camera or sound-to-picture workflows. The compact form factor and mic-style housing allow secure hand-held use or stand mounting. Alkaline batteries provide approximately 19 hours of continuous operation in 2-track mode, or 10 hours across all four tracks – lithium cells extend this to 31 and 18.5 hours respectively.

About Zoom

Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.

Flexible recording conversion

All files recorded on the M4 MicTrak are stored to microSD card (up to 1TB SDXC) in 32-bit float WAV or BWF format at sample rates from 44.1kHz to 192kHz. Recordings can be normalised onboard and converted to 24-bit or 16-bit formats for DAW compatibility. Via USB-C, the M4 functions as a 4-in/2-out audio interface at 48kHz in 24-bit or 32-bit float, compatible with Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. A built-in mono speaker allows quick playback auditioning in the field without headphones. Remote control is available via the optional Zoom RC2, RC4, RCH-5, or RCH-6 accessories for hands-free operation at distance.

A big upgrade from my Zoom h2n
Erghargh 15.05.2025
I've been using a Zoom H2N for about a decade. I wanted to upgrade, and despite mixed reviews I decided to take a chance on the Zoom M4, as the price has come down to a very affordable point. I picked it up in the Thomann sale and have no regrets at all.

First a quick note on RF Interference. As soon as I received it I tested for RF Noise Interference, which is widely reported to affect the first release of these recorders. I was actually on the fence about this purchase, due to all the bad reviews out there. If you're reading this, you've probably seen the same YouTube videos as me. Fortunately this problem seems to be completely resolved now, and I found no interference in my unit, even when recording right next to a microwave etc.

Recording quality: I mostly picked the Zoom M4, as it has high quality preamps for external mics. I expected to use those, and not the built in condensers. When I received it I compared the built-in mics it to Behringer B5s – a low cost, high quality mic, that I thought would be a good comparison. I found that the Zoom m4 yields a wider stereo effect, while the recording quality/detail was pretty comparable, maybe even slightly sharper. I guess a pair of SDCs will always give you more flexibility but I find myself just using the built-in mics, because the quality is actually very good – a LOT more detail than the H2N, which I upgraded from. For context, I record solo fingerpicked acoustic, in a room with only soft furnishings to deaden reverberation etc, and the built in Zoom M4 mics are very forgiving. Personally, I currently record just to hear and improve my playing – but in the right hands you could make some very high quality recordings.

The 32 bit float is nice, a novelty rather than a must-have; main benefit is that it makes it quicker to get recording as I don't need to set gain.

Negative points: I do think it's a weird looking thing, and the interface is not that intuitive, fresh out of the box, though you get used to it. If you use it for field recordings you might get handling noise (doesn't affect me as I use a tripod or mic stand.) I sometimes worry about dropping it (maybe I didn't worry enough with the H2N?). Those are minor points. Overall, I'm happy, and it sounds great.

Great value
Etyyd 10.08.2025
I bought this to replace my old and sticky, but otherwise good-sounding H6 recorder.
The first thing that became clear is that the built-in microphones are not designed for quieter outdoor recordings. Additionally, it picks up significantly more noise when handled. The functionality, 32-bit recording, is great and the setup is very easy. Still, I like the format of the device and with external microphones, the sound is good - the preamps are decent.
You just have to carefully consider the situations for its use. The existing microphones are probably intended for higher volume cases. Otherwise, great value.

Very versatile

Reasonable build quality. Good battery life. Very versatile.
Internal mics are good and useful for on the go recordings. The F series preamps make this a viable alternative to the big brothers- F3 F6 etc. The build is not as good, but using the xlr inputs and comparing to my F3 I get equivalent noise performance and detail

What an incredible device !
Drnpaca 18.12.2025
I use this for recording my in-ear mix for social media content and combining this with the 2 mics for completely a 4 channel high quality recordings and not worrying about peak and gain staging is mind blowing.

I highly recommend it.

Also the mics sound absolutely beautiful
