Stereo audio in just one take
The Zoom M2 MicTrak is a compact stereo field recorder built around a 90° X/Y microphone capsule, recording at up to 96kHz in 32-bit float to microSD card or directly via USB-C. The 32-bit float engine handles up to 135dB SPL without gain adjustment – levels can be corrected after recording rather than set in advance, removing the main technical barrier to clean location capture. The low-noise housing finish and X/Y capsule geometry are specifically designed to minimise handling noise, and a 2-second pre-record buffer captures audio before the record button is pressed. At 204g including batteries and 221.5×61.9×59.3mm, the M2 is the most compact recorder in the MicTrak range – light enough to hold comfortably for extended periods without fatigue.
32-bit float for precise audio
The M2's interface is deliberately minimal: A single switch selects between stereo and mono modes, a lo-cut filter reduces low-frequency handling and wind noise, and transport controls handle recording, playback, and stop. The 96×64 LCD screen visualises real-time waveforms during recording and playback. Headphone monitoring via the 3.5mm output allows direct level checking in the field; a built-in 500mW speaker covers quick playback auditioning without headphones. Recording is available at 44.1, 48, or 96kHz in 32-bit float, with BWF and iXML metadata supported for broadcast and video workflows. Alkaline batteries provide approximately 11 hours of continuous operation; lithium cells extend this to around 22 hours.
A true all-rounder
The M2 suits content creators, musicians, podcasters, and journalists who need reliable stereo capture without a steep learning curve. Stereo mode covers live performance, rehearsal, and ambient recording; mono mode focuses the pickup for interviews and dialogue where background rejection matters. The lo-cut filter and included windshield are worth engaging for any outdoor use – without them, handling and wind noise can intrude noticeably at low frequencies. The included mic clip mounts the M2 on any standard microphone stand for stationary recording. For users stepping up from the M2, the M4 adds two external XLR inputs, timecode generation, and 192kHz recording for more demanding location and video applications.
About Zoom
Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.
Flexible format conversion
Recordings are stored to a microSD card (not included) in 32-bit float WAV or BWF/iXML format, with SDXC support up to 1TB. Long recordings are automatically split at the 2GB file limit and saved to the card at regular intervals, so a power failure won't lose an entire session. Files can be normalised onboard and converted to 24-bit or 16-bit formats for DAW compatibility without requiring a computer. Via USB-C, the M2 functions as a 2-in/2-out USB microphone at 48kHz in 24-bit or 32-bit float, compatible with Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android – and it records to the SD card simultaneously while operating as a USB mic, providing a local backup of any live session or stream. A card-reader mode allows a computer to access recorded files over USB without having to extract the card.
