Compact recording hardware
The Zoom LiveTrak L-6 brings together a portable multitrack recorder, digital mixer, and audio interface in one compact unit. Two XLR/TRS combo inputs with dual A/D converter circuits handle mic and line signals on channels 1 and 2 – no gain adjustment required, while the converters handle wide dynamic ranges automatically, even across extreme input levels. Four stereo line inputs bring the total to ten analogue inputs, with 12-track simultaneous recording to microSD card at 48kHz/32-bit float. Each channel includes 3-band EQ with sweepable mid, two AUX sends, pan, and volume, alongside built-in delay, reverb, and compression. MIDI In/Out on TRS mini-jacks handles external device integration and USB MIDI, and four assignable sound pads cover sample playback and loop triggering. At 526g including batteries and 223×114×47mm, the L-6 is the most compact LiveTrak in the range.
Versatile connectivity
On the far left, two XLR combo sockets accept both XLR and jack cables, with a shared 48V phantom power switch for condenser microphones. Each channel's rotary encoder is assigned via the column of function buttons – pan, send levels, or EQ – giving direct access without menu navigation. Inputs 3 and 4 operate as stereo channels with dual jack sockets; the Mono function splits them into two independent mono signals when needed. Channels 5 and 6 offer an additional USB return option, routing signals from a connected computer directly into the mixer. Via USB-C, the L-6 functions as a 12-in/4-out audio interface at 48kHz, with 32-bit float or 24-bit fixed options. A master bus compressor with automatic make-up gain can be engaged independently of the multitrack recording, useful for taming the dynamic range during live streaming or performance without affecting the recorded tracks.
Uncomplicated, but uncompromising
The Zoom LiveTrak L-6 is aimed at musicians looking for a simple way to capture live rehearsals or smaller band sessions without a complicated setup. USB-C connectivity covers both computer and smartphone recording, while microSDXC card support up to 1TB provides extended recording capacity. The 32-bit float recording engine removes the need to set gain on channels 1 and 2 – levels can be adjusted after recording without risk of clipping. One honest limitation worth noting is that when working with the standalone device, playback is restricted to the last recording; accessing previous takes requires the free-to-download companion editor software on Mac or Windows. Three scene memories store and recall full mixer snapshots instantly. The optional ERL-6 adapter enables Eurorack integration for modular setups.
About Zoom
Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.
Versatile tool for live streams and mobile recording
As a USB audio interface, the L-6 handles livestreaming and session recording across Mac, PC, and iOS devices. Microphones, guitars, and external effects route through the AUX sends directly to the streaming software, while MIDI integrates drum machines and synthesizers into the signal chain. Battery life runs to approximately 3 hours on alkaline batteries, 3.5 hours on NiMH, and up to 7 hours on lithium – enough for extended rehearsal or location recording sessions. USB bus power and optional battery pack operation add further flexibility for mobile use.
