Very good mixer with small Ergonomieschw chen

02.03.2017
In short, the story of how I got to the desk: for Homerecording had to create a new desk. I first had the Alto 1604, quite good desk, but the USB interface caused a disturbing, high-frequency noise. Can not go. The problem is known, there is information on the Internet. After that I had the Yamaha MG 16 XU. Already much better, also from the sound, but also here problems with the USB interface, misfires in the data stream, reproducible on several systems. Also, the number of channels turned out to be too small.
So now the MG 20: the sound is like the 16XU version very excellent, you could say (as with a vodka-brand), crystal clear and absolutely pure, in addition quite a headroom. The desk does not sound at all, and that is very good. I noticed that compared to the 16XU the stereo channels seem to have a little headroom. Disturbed me at first something, but by turning the gain by max. 2-3 dashes are compensated very well and completely without noise. The monokanals have an awesome power, in most cases I do not need the gain here at all. Also the compressors are hardly in use, these sound otherwise not bad, albeit rather subtle.
Ergonomics is all in all good. Something irritating: the stereo jacks are offset to the corresponding channels, so sometimes the wrong controls are used (jacks 13/14 exactly via channel 15/16 ..). The channel faders are somewhat shaky and easy. However, the first is certainly not a problem with careful handling, and the latter I find even good because it makes the adjustment quick and easy.
I would have liked a USB interface, but now I use my Motu UltraLite mk3, which provides excellent results in connection with the MG 20 and a Win7 64 system.
The illuminated on / off switches per channel I find very good. So you have all active channels immediately in view. Below these switches there is some space, where I have attached some small stickers with the appropriate instrument names. This way you have a very good overview. The routing switches are not so easy to operate with 20 channels due to the tightly mounted faders, at least if you have a little bit thicker fingers. Too bad I also find that the routing switches in the channel strips are not illuminated. So you have to keep a close eye on whether the channel is switched to the stereo mix or one of the two subgroups. Good thing is that, unlike other consoles, you can switch various routing combinations or everything on or off. However, in the case of some more complex routings, one must go through all the channels involved and deliberately establish / check all corresponding assignments. With illuminated routing switches it would be easier.

All in all, the MG 20 is a well thought-out and very good sounding desk, which I can highly recommend at the price. For me it is one of the best acquisitions in the last few years, for the sole reason that there are no disturbances or side-effects. The biggest plus is surely the clean sound in connection with headroom. Weaknesses exist in ergonomics, but they can be made effective. The price is not much better.
