An acoustic bass from the specialists

Warwick RockBass Alien Standard 5 Black, five-string bass guitar

Warwick has been one of Germany's go-to names for all things low-end for decades nows, and that expertise shines through once again in the Warwick RockBass Alien Standard 5 acoustic bass. Premium woods combined with Warwick's stylish Satin Black finish give this unique instrument both its elegant appearance and its expressive, deep sound. And when needed, that sound can be amplified and shaped to taste thanks to the onboard pickup and built-in preamp. The Alien Standard 5's 34" full-size scale length gives it plenty of power and penetration, and some other highlights include the high-end hardware, a handy thumb rest, 24 nickel-silver frets, a generous cutaway, and a gig bag with tools included. Considering the features and build quality, the Alien acoustic five-string offers bassists excellent value for money.

Exquisite ingredients

The top of an acoustic instrument plays an absolutely crucial role in giving it a balanced sound – so on the Warwick RockBass Alien Standard 5, it's made from solid sitka spruce, a top-tier choice. The neck is crafted from mahogany, while the back and sides are made from agathis, also known as kauri spruce. Bassists have a full 24 frets at their disposal, while the wenge fingerboard is complemented by a bridge and thumb rest made from the same wood for a consistent look and feel. The Alien Standard 5 has nut width of 45mm, slim for a five-string, making it especially easy on the hands. High-quality chrome hardware, produced in-house, includes Warwick's signature adjustable nut and security locks system. And if this acoustic Alien's volume isn't quite enough, the built-in Sonicore piezo pickup and Sonitone preamp, both from Fishman, will be happy to help.

From the stage to the garden to the beach

Since the late '90s at the very latest, an acoustic or unplugged set has been an essential part of every band's live repertoire. Of course, this means everyone – including the bass player – needs to bring along the right kind of instrument, one that looks the part and sounds it too. Luckily, the Warwick RockBass Alien Standard 5 passes these tests with flying colours, but it's not just built for live performances – it's also perfect for backyard acoustic sessions or simply jamming on the beach, since there's no need to rely on power outlets for amplification. The low B string adds further depth to the bottom end. With its attractive pricing and, more to the point, excellent value for money, the Warwick Alien is also a strong contender for consideration as an ambitious musicians's second or third instrument – certainly, it'll add something genuinely unique and useful to any collection.

All your bass are belong to us

Warwick covers all the bases, basses, and bassists – even the lefties! – when it comes to gear and hardware, which includes a matching gigbag right out of the box here. But the German manufacturer also has plenty more tech for this Alien, starting with amplification: The compact combos from the BC series range from 10W all the way up 150W, offering plenty of power and superb sound for home use, rehearsal spaces, or smaller venues. For those who need more volume, Warwick's Gnome series is the next step up, with combos, heads, and cabinets ready to meet professional demands. Warwick also has accessories for every occasion: This includes exactly the right strings for the Alien acoustic bass (Warwick Red or Black Label), plus care products, tools, and clip-on tuners to keep everything sounding sweet.

Edles Teil

tuning is stable, sound is nice, the pickup sounds good as well. buyers beware: it only ships with one strap lock. you have to buy and install the second one yourself.
one thing i'm not fond of is that the pin which holds the b string on the bridge doesn't stay in place and is being pulled to about .5 cm. however, it stays still afterwards.
