An acoustic bass from the specialists

Warwick RB Alien Standard 4 FL NT, acoustic fretless bass guitar

Warwick has been one of Germany's go-to names for all things low-end for decades nows, and that expertise shines through once again in the Warwick RB Alien Standard 4 Fretless Natural acoustic bass. Premium woods with a transparent finish give this fine fretless instrument both its elegant appearance and its expressive sound. And when needed, that sound can be amplified and shaped to taste thanks to the onboard pickup and built-in preamp. The Alien Standard 4 FL's 32" scale length strikes a sweet spot between power and playability, and some other highlights – besides the fretless ebony fingerboard – include the high-end hardware, a handy thumb rest, a generous cutaway, and a gig bag with tools included. Considering the features and build quality, the Warwick RB Alien Standard 4 acoustic bass offers excellent value for money.

Exquisite ingredients

The top of an acoustic instrument plays an absolutely crucial role in giving it a balanced sound – so on the Warwick RB Alien Standard 4 FL, it's made from solid sitka spruce, a top-tier choice. The neck is crafted from mahogany, while the back and sides are made from agathis, also known as kauri spruce. The ebony fingerboard features 24 discreet fretlines to help keep players oriented; it's complemented by a bridge and thumb rest made from wenge, a visually very similar wood, for a consistent look and feel. The Alien Standard 4 features a slightly shorter 32" scale length and a nut width of 38.5mm, making it especially easy on the hands. High-quality chrome hardware, produced in-house, includes Warwick's signature adjustable nut and security locks system. And if this acoustic Alien's volume isn't quite enough, the built-in Sonicore piezo pickup and Sonitone preamp, both from Fishman, will be happy to help.

From the stage to the garden to the beach

Since the late '90s at the very latest, an acoustic or unplugged set has been an essential part of every band's repertoire. Of course, this means everyone – including the bass player – needs to bring along the right kind of instrument, one that looks the part and sounds it too. Luckily, the Alien passes these tests with flying colours, with its fretless fingerboard giving the instrument's sound a certain lyrical 'je ne sais quoi'. But it's not just built for the stage – it's also perfect for backyard acoustic sessions or simply jamming on the beach, with no need for power outlets for amplification. Thanks to its relatively compact size, the Alien acoustic bass also makes a great travelling companion. With its attractive pricing and, more to the point, excellent value for money, the Warwick RB Alien Standard 4 Fretless is also a strong contender for consideration as an ambitious bassist's second or third instrument – certainly, it'll add something unique and useful to any collection.

All your bass are belong to us

Warwick covers all the bases, basses, and bassists when it comes to gear and hardware, which includes a matching gigbag right out of the box here. But the German manufacturer also has plenty more tech for this Alien, starting with amplification: The compact combos from the BC series range from 10W all the way up 150W, offering plenty of power and superb sound for home use, rehearsal spaces, or smaller venues. For those who need more volume, Warwick's Gnome series is the next step up, with combos, heads, and cabinets ready to meet professional demands. Warwick also has accessories for every occasion: This includes exactly the right strings for the Alien acoustic bass (Warwick Red or Black Label), plus care products, tools, and clip-on tuners to keep everything sounding sweet.

T
great quality instrument

I'm no longer a gigging bassist, so this is for home studio recording only.
Only four stars for features rather than five for the following reasons:
The Fishman preamp sounds great but it is very limited. Just volume & tone which is not a problem in itself, but the tone control is very subtle & doesn't do a whole lot, so there is no great tonal variety, it just does what it does. Luckily it sounds great!
One good thing is that the fret lines actually go around the side of the neck, so can be easily viewed from the playing position, this is a nice touch. Also the gigbag is quite nice quality, pretty decently padded.
But less forgivable is the strap pin situation. Firstly, you only get one. This is a bit stingy in itself (such an instrument would definitely need two, I wouldn't want to trust a shoelace on this neck) but there's more...you have to fit it yourself! Yes that's right, you have to drill the hole and fit the strap pin yourself. They do give you a spare battery which is nice to have but I would rather have a second strap pin than a second battery...and have them fitted please! Come on Warwick! This is not good enough!
Overall however it's a beautifully made instrument & sounds lovely so full marks for the important stuff, which is the sound & the feel.
I can't wait to put some flatwounds on this baby and see what she says :)
