Nice compact digital delay

StormWind, 01.04.2018
Do you want a nice straight digital delay with tap tempo, without all the bells and wistles, in a small and comfortable enclosure? Then you've come to the right place! The Arp-87 can tickle your inspiration with 5 (that's right 4 + 1 "secret" algorithm... but sssh, don't tell anybody!) very nice presets, from cristal clear digital delay, to surfin' USA slapback! Top notch quality components, very bright LEDs, multifunction tap tempo and bypass switches... ready to take off?

Great delay! My shootout winner

Michael943, 05.02.2018
I was looking for a delay for my little board and compared it to the Pink Panther, Strymon Dig, and Source Audio Nemesis.

I try to make it as short as possible: Dig and Nemesis are stereo delays and therefore in a different league. The Pink Panther is a copy / tribute to the Dig. Same color, own sound (that would be bright, friendly, beautiful, friendly modulation). Of course, the Dig adds that this is a dual delay and you can do some great rhythmic stuff with it (which really comes into its own in a stereo setup). Nevertheless - and I know the ghosts are split - I can not shake the feeling that the Dig changes my basic sound. The sound becomes a little more plastic, artificial, despite Analag Dry Through. We're really just talking about a nuance that 99% of users would not notice (and even an audience), but it bothers me, so the dig back goes. The Nemesis also distorts the sound, makes it darker, and I do not like the modulation. The Pink Panther makes the Dry Signal a little louder when you turn it on (which bothers me too), but above all, it seems immature to me. The Mix / Level Knob scratches audibly, playing with the Time knob does not cause spacey soundcapades, but an annoying, electronic crackle. And why not a single footswitch is equipped with a special function is also a mystery to me.

So let's get to the ARP-87, I share my feedback in positives and negatives: I think it's great
+ Both footswitches have special features, especially what makes the right one is a hit. If you hold this when the effect is turned on, the last part is looped in the circle AND new is also overlooked with delay and looped! This makes it easy to create "Walls of Sound" that sound incredibly good, but still has delay on the guitar (not even the Strymon can do that, because the effect is cut).
+ The Walrus Audio ARP-87 is the only (!!!) effect that does not touch the dry sound, it does not make it sound any lower, darker or brighter, the sound stays as it is! And
+ It's also the only pedal with soft switches that does not produce crackling or dropouts on the sound when you activate the effect.
+ Personally I find the modulation very nice, but it sounds very different from the (bright, friendly, U2-moderate) modulation of the Dig or the Pink Panther! I think the space theme of the design was a bit unlucky, for me it sounds like a dark forest like some kind of fairy tale. The sound is almost tape-moderate, not as clean as the three others, but very assertive.
+ Speaking of assertiveness: With the ARP-87 I was the only one who had the feeling that the repeats do not fight against the clean sound of the guitar, but are really beautiful, but also differentiated in the background. You can always distinguish the clean sound from the sound of the repeats, great sound design.
+ The ARP was also the cheapest in this shootout :-)
+ Constructed like a tank, clearly the most stable and robust delay of this shootout

negative:
- Keyword sound design: Repeats always differentiated audible, great done, unfortunately there is also a downside: I personally think of the 4 Engines only the Digital Delay available, because the other 2 (Slapback is not interesting for me by default) just then too dark / warm / undifferentiated. And even the digital delay engine never reaches the clarity of the other three pedals, that must be clear! For that I found my favorite attitude very quickly and I will leave it at any time: Digital Delay Engine, Mix and Repeat exactly at 12, Dampen (= tone color) and X (= modulation) at maximum. So I have this haunted, not too clear, but very assertive Mod-Delay sound, which I appreciate so much on this pedal!

All in all, if you're looking for a (mono) delay pedal with tap tempo and a bit darker / more analog sound, the ARP-87 is just the thing !! If you prefer a friendly, brighter sound then you should check out the Dig!
