Conflict

Dreli, 29.06.2012
I would like to share my experiences with the Stairville DMX Master MK II ENC from the point of view of a DJ who is concentrating on his musical work and does not want to spend the evening at the light desk.

Let's begin with the good:
The unit is super cheap and can do a lot! The features are not overground, but adequate and the processing is satisfactory. When you shake the desk, the pushbuttons rattle because they are nowhere attached, but only clamp between the front plate and the board. But nothing comes out. The often described steering wheels for PAN and TILT are with me very well and firm. I can not say they're wobbly. Thanks to the detailed manual (German & English included), the programming of scenes and chasers works perfectly.

But why am I then not satisfied with the service?
To do this, I have to describe what I need the desk for and what I have imagined: the desk should have 8 PAR cans (no LED) + 2x front light, as well as various LED effects (REVO III, Quadphase, LED Bar's, etc.) Syncron with each other. In addition, the console also replaced the remote control of my fog machine (older model with DIN connector (no Stairville)). But more about that later! Now I thought, I document the 1st scene of Bank 1 with a basic mood. So before the event dampened light. 2nd scene with a ground + front light. More scenes with different color schemes and the last 3 of this bench with different Stobe speeds of LED effects. On the back benches I then saved scenes for the 6 chase and the chase programmed accordingly. Now I thought: before the event - press scene 1 (funkioniert). Welcome - Press Scene 2 (works). First Music - Press Chase1 (does not work, since you have to change the mode from manual to auto). After the music comes ne announcement - press scene 2 (does not work, because you have to switch back to manual mode). During a song (chase runs) comes a strobe passage - press scene 7 (does not work because of wrong mode).
Why are there any 2 modes? Are not scenes always manual (static)? Are not chasers always automated? No chase makes sense if he does not run alone! Why do I have to switch each time? I want to concentrate as a DJ on my work and not to use the light!
Next weak point: the TAP function! It would have been so easy! Music goes off - I select the first chase and press the TAP button 3-4x and the light is running syncron to the music! This is also, but unfortunately the TAP not only determines the Wait-Time but also the Fade-Time. This would not do with PAR light, because the values ??(0 - 255) of a DMX channel determine the brightness. Thus, PAR 1 is faded out while PAR 2 is inserted. This is not the case with LED effects. There, the values ??of a DMX channel determine different patterns. Thus, if the stored pattern is at the value 230, the one fades from 0-230 and thus passes through all the patterns which are between 0-230. And there are many! A corresponding step of a chase is never shown, since the desk is always at the thread and the guest comes only confused confusion.

Further minus point: The Fog section! So whoever thinks that works with almost every fog machine, which has a DIN connector, is a great mistake. There is no standard for the assignment of a DIN plug to the use of fog machines. Each manufacturer assigns the connectors differently. And there is also no list, where it stands, which fog machines with the fog section and which do not work. In the manual, although a circuit diagram of the fog section and a pin assignment of the DIN socket is shown, but how do you know if this fits with the connections of the fog machine? In addition, the pin numbering in the manual is incorrect. For a DIN plug, the pins have the following numbering from left to right: 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3! Stairville does not care about this norm! You simply number the pins: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5! If you want to solder a suitable cable, not properly and the Stairville-4 connects with the standard-4, could have had an expensive short circuit! In any case (thanks to the fog section) my fog machine now no longer works. But I have yet to see what's going on. Surely only one fuse!
Likewise, I find the blackout button! Who does it all at once? Everything (as FLASH) - okay! But everything from ???

Conclusion: Good ideas are behind it. The desk is well programmed, but unfortunately totally cumbersome to use. The mode selection (AUTO / DEL) is in my opinion the biggest nonsense!
