Comparison Shure: SM 58 LC, Beta 58A, Beta87A

Paul_331, 11.07.2010
I have compared the following three microphones sonically to an AER CUBE III.

SM 58 (Dynamic) Result sound: 3 stars
Beta 58 A (Dynamic) Result sound: 5 stars
Beta 87 A (condenser) Result sound: 4 - 5 stars

I am male and sing in the barriton range to tenor guitar. And my outstanding test winner over all three mics is the beta 58 A.

Comparing the two dynamic Mirkos SM 58 and Beta 58 A, both sound the same in the lower and middle range. In the heights, brilliance and clarity, the Beta 58 A is clearly superior to the SM 58. The Beta 58 A was clearly the better dynamic Mirkofon. In the data sheets of the two the SM is 58 to 15 kHz, the
Beta 58 A to 16 kHz. Actually not very much difference, but in practice the audible difference is gigantic.

The comparison of the beta 58 A (dynamic) with the almost twice as expensive condensation microphone Beta 87 was disappointing for me.
Supposedly, the condensation microphone should be clearer and better in the heights. This says the advertising and in the short frequency range mentioned in the data sheet is 20 kHz with the beta 87A and 16 kHz with the beta 58 A. Since should be noticeable in practice, I thought, if already the 1 kHz between the dynamic mics in the Practice a very big difference.

But in practice I simply could not pick out a really noticeable difference in the heights and clarity between the two. I could hardly believe that at first. The subsequent look at the detailed frequency response of the two microphones (shown in the operating instructions of both Mirkos) has confirmed the practical result with the theory.

Good in bad conditions

Samuel K., 04.11.2009
We use the Shure Beta 87A on a recommendation for 3 weeks for the lead vocals in an evangelical Freikirche at the Sunday services and at larger events in public rooms (Stadthalle).

The Shure Beta 87A was specially recommended for this because it is easy to talk and has a warm, bright and clear sound. It can be held well and almost without a hand-held noise in the hand, and even with tripod mounting it is very good that untrained users unconsciously greatly change the distance and angle to the microphone. The micro is also good for PA systems, whose quality-poor components are almost not coordinated with each other, but are compiled for each external event, and are always served by changing, more or less qualified amateurs. Here, the Shure Beta 87A delivers a great deal, because even under unfavorable conditions no pressed and resonance-distorted microphone sound gets.

The qualified and less qualified singers and toners are almost equally grateful to us for the purchase of this microphone, and sooner or later the purchase of the wireless microphone with the Beta 87 capsule will have to be discussed.
