Shadow Design RG-3 or the battle tone and volume!
Lonesome Wolf, 20.01.2015
Yes, Hello first,
Well, how am I supposed to? I've been playing guitar for a long time, and I wanted to play "Robert Johnson, explixit Dust by broom" live. This is for me tasteful with the Dobro (... so Elmore James, etc, .....) the best. Hm, but before the "things" but live to be played, then must also the sound strengthened well, without much cable sound and microphone positioning, etc.! Too stupid only, that my instrument so far without pickup get along and with microphone -quietsch- had to be removed. So now to the shadow design RG-3 passively grabbed, because me the guitar pickup micro not really really like. After receipt by the Päckmann, which happened as usual after the order extremely fast, Dobro and Pickup wandered to the guitar-screw of my trust here on site.
Assembly: My guitar screwdriver signaled me an assembly time of about 1 week, but then called supererschnell after three days with me, to tell me that the pickup was installed. When I picked up I wanted to know how the installation of the Shadow Design RG-3 ran like this. I got the following answer: The pickup, together with also supplied mounting accessories could fit easily into the instrument. The included assembly instructions (English) are also easy to understand and provide usable text for mounting the pickup. With patience and a little manual skill, the skilled craftsman guitarist - I do not belong to it - can perform the assembly himself well.
First game test: Back home, I closed the Dobro - now with installed Shadow Design RG-3 - to an ACUS One 6 and tried the Dobro first in standard mood and later in Open-G. The result was not really tingling! Gain and master control of the amp had to be between quarter to half rotation - to min. 3-5 - be pulled up, so that at all a sound (No, I'm not hearing impaired!) From the amp was to be heard. Afterwards, the sound of the Dobro sounded unadulterated and clear, but the sound control of the amp (bass, mids, highs) was only weakly noticeable. No the amp is not broken - with other instruments, eg a passive sound reduction in an Ibanez AE 105 TV, all mentioned problems do not occur. In the end, I put the Dobro slightly acidified with their tonally amplified sound, with too much bass and too much bass, too, in the evening parties, to make me think about how to adjust both volume and sound color problems.
Second gameplay: After trying out several floor-mates, I finally found the good solution for me in the form of the intermediate equalizer Boss GE-7. On the one hand, I can now adjust the sound I am accepting by changing the frequency paths and use the level control to set an input volume for the amp which, in turn, allows for a signal response in the lower power range of the amp and also leaves enough reserve behind when the volume has to be raised. Long story short, since I have the boss GE-7 between instrument / pickup and amp have laid, I am completely satisfied with the shadow design RG-3
CONCLUSION: In hindsight, I would have been able to buy an active TA system for my Dobro. I did not want this because of the eternal battery changes. I also have very good experiences with the passive Ibanez pickup described above. As for the Shadow Design RG-3, I'm under the misunderstanding, which is already great with a passive pickup (To blame itself, so to think and again what learned!). I am now, with intervening Bodentreter, satisfied with the pickup and will not return it because it was already installed in my Dobro but, so quite thoughtless I can not recommend the Shadow Design RG-3 and would give it to me Not a second time.
