Fluent, warm and expressive

Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Vintage JJ 5 Fretless Left-Handed Black, five-string bass guitar

The Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Vintage JJ 5 Fretless Black is, as the name suggests, a fretless five-string version of the New York-based high-end bass manufacturer's Vintage model in a left-handed variant. Vintage here refers to the instrument's classic pickup configuration, with a pair of noiseless J-style pickups at the bridge and neck responding with their typically warm, nuanced character to everything the fretless morado fingerboard – a tonewood with a very fine-pored structure for a particularly smooth playing feel – produces, from soft, singing tones to articulate bass riffs. And with its resonant okoume body and roasted maple neck, as well as the renowned Sadowsky active 2-band preamp (which allows bassists to switch effortlessly between a more modern, punchy sound and passive mode, for an authentic vintage character) the Vintage JJ 5 FL LH combines fluent expressivity with the precision, versatility and reliability that makes Sadowsky basses so popular.

Comfort and control

The Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Vintage JJ 5 combines professional playability with a host of practical features. With its 12" fingerboard radius, 34" scale length, and 19mm string spacing, lefties will always feel they can handle the bass naturally and intuitively, while still maintaining precise control over their slides and vibratos. The fretless morado fingerboard is extremely sensitive to dynamics and technique, with both fluent, singing runs and expressive glissando among its repertoire. And the dedicated controls for volume, balance, treble, and bass mean musicians can dial in their signature tone single-handedly (or indeed left-handedly). The Just-A-Nut III nut keeps intonation precise, and the quick-release bridge makes string changes quick and easy; lightweight tuners, security locks, and a quick-access battery compartment make this bass ready for everyday use.

For southpaw stylists

This fretless Sadowsky is made for left-handed players who really want to define their own style when it comes to tone, expression, and dynamics. Jazz, Fusion, and Soul bassists will love the smooth transitions and organic slides, while studio musicians playing on Rock and Pop tracks will appreciate its warm, present sound and the extra bottom end the low B string contributes. The Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Vintage JJ 5 Fretless Left-Handed Black is less a beginner's bass, and more a musical toolkit for players with a good ear and a real feel for musicality, which is what playing a fretless instrument requires – the Sadowsky Vintage FL would be a great choice for an upright bass player looking to make the move to electric, perhaps in a Jazz ensemble. Thanks to its active 2-band EQ, though, the Vintage is guaranteed to be flexible enough to cut through in modern or electronic setups, too.

About Sadowsky

For over 40 years, professional musicians have associated the name Sadowsky with high-end bass guitars, electric guitars, and archtop Jazz guitars. In the late 1970s, Roger Sadowsky opened his own workshop, where he started out repairing and modifying instruments from other brands. In the '80s, he began to develop bass guitars that represented his own unique vision: Soon, the name Sadowsky had a worldwide reputation for quality, thanks in part to prominent clients like Marcus Miller and Will Lee. Roger's legendary inventions include the on-board preamp for bass guitars, which helped create such extraordinary demand for Sadowsky instruments that he eventually made the decision to start producing the Metro line of basses in Japan. In 2019, the German bass specialist Warwick assumed manufacturing responsibilities for the Metro series, ensuring the name Sadowsky will continue to be synonymous with high-quality instruments for years to come.

Expression, not aggression

In the studio, the Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Vintage JJ 5 Fretless Left-Handed Black really comes into its own: It delivers clear, woody fundamentals with an almost vocal presence, making it ideal for Jazz, Soul, Ambient, or atmospheric Pop and Rock projects. On stage, it shines with its vibrant dynamics and a present, punchy tone that slots effortlessly into any band setup. Its flexible EQ layout lets musicians fine-tune their sound to suit the room and the vibe, while the JJ pickup config delivers classic warmth and responsiveness. Paired with quality DI preamps, tube stacks, or recording interfaces, it becomes a versatile tool for players chasing more than just punchy low end – it's all about the purity of musical expression.
