Pads, sequencing, and much more

The Novation Launchpad Pro MK3 is a pad-based grid controller with an integrated sequencer, velocity- and pressure-sensitive RGB pads, and dedicated hardware MIDI connectivity – aimed at producers and live performers who want to shape and sequence their tracks, not just trigger them. The 64 large RGB pads allow for expressive melodic and rhythmic playing, while 42 backlit tactile-click buttons give direct access to mixer, transport, and arrangement controls. Combined with deep Ableton Live and Logic Pro integration, a standalone sequencer, and Custom Mode support for any MIDI-compatible software or hardware, the Pro MK3 functions as a flexible hub for both studio production and live performance.

Novation Launchpad Pro MK3

Control external hardware with the integrated sequencer

One of the defining features of the Launchpad Pro MK3 is its built-in four-track, 32-step sequencer with eight-note polyphony per track, which makes it possible to create and develop patterns directly on the device without a computer. Sequences play through to the end before switching, with the next pattern coming in exactly on the beat – transitions stay rhythmically consistent and sit neatly within the groove. Pattern chaining allows sequences to be linked and assigned to scenes, building complete song structures from the grid. Probability, Mutation, Sync Rate, and Play Order give further options for introducing variation and keeping sequences evolving. External hardware connects via MIDI In, Out, and Out 2/Thru on 3.5mm TRS connectors – three DIN adapters are included – making the Pro MK3 a capable control centre for hybrid software and hardware rigs.

Hands-on, responsive control

Scale mode maps the pads to a selected musical key, keeping melodic playing harmonically consistent without having to think about tonal relationships – useful for sketching ideas quickly or performing live without hitting wrong notes. Chord mode builds harmonies from single pad presses, while Drum mode provides a direct percussive input layout for rhythm programming. Capture MIDI recovers spontaneous ideas after the fact and converts them instantly into clips, without requiring recording to have been active beforehand. Custom Modes allow the full 8×8 grid to be reconfigured for any MIDI-compatible software or hardware via the Novation Components editor – layouts are stored as one of eight onboard modes and persist when the computer is disconnected, so the Pro MK3 can control an all-hardware rig independently.

Novation Launchpad Pro MK3

About Novation

The English company Novation has been producing affordable popular synthesizers as well as MIDI controllers and keyboards since its foundation in 1992. It was later acquired by the well-known British audio interface manufacturer Focusrite, but the brand still exists within the parent company. The outstanding design, high-quality workmanship and excellent price-performance ratio of the Novation Launchpads have continued to win them many new users. Novation synthesizers include the 8-voice Polyphone Peak, the analogue mono synthesizer Bass Station II, the MiniNova and the paraphonic analogue synthesizer Circuit Mono Station.

Customisable and ready for any DAW

The Launchpad Pro MK3 integrates most extensively with Ableton Live – launching clips and scenes, accessing mixer and transport controls, quantising, duplicating, and doubling without touching a mouse – and offers dedicated Live Loops and project navigation for Logic Pro. Beyond these, Custom Modes and freely assignable MIDI mappings make it equally at home with any other MIDI-compatible software or hardware, with mixer and transport control available across all environments. The included software bundle covers the essentials for getting started: Ableton Live Lite and Cubase LE for recording and arrangement, Klevgrand plugins for mixing and effects, XLN Audio and AAS instruments, and Melodics finger drumming lessons. The Pro MK3 is USB bus powered for standard use; a USB power supply is included for standalone sequencer operation away from a computer.

It's ok when it works
Shinyuu Wolfy 22.08.2021
Update: I've now updated the quality rating as my first Launchpad had an issues with pads self-triggering after a month of use and my replacement has noticeable pads discoloration. It's still a great and compact device, when it works.

It's the largest of the launchpads, even though it's still smaller than e.g. Ableton Push. The pads are nicely responsive and the pressure curve immediately makes sense.

It seems like a 8x8 grid at first, but as you work more with it you start to appreciate the layout and the features. I got to the point where I haven't touched my keyboard at all because I could program both drums and synths on pads alone.

Novation seems to prioritize the Ableton Live crowd and as such the controller has lots of great features specifically tailored for Live. Nevertheless, it's a joy to hook it up to an iPad (and avail of the built-in 4-channel sequencer). It also works really good with Bitwig.

TC
Capable and fun (but also fiddly) controller
The Caspian 31.10.2022
This is a bit of a strange animal — physically, it feels a bit fragile: the housing is plastic, and the unit is relatively thin and light. However, the actual pads and buttons are very responsive and feel *great* to the touch. So long as it can stay stationary on a flat surface it feels very good. I'd be wary of traveling with it though.

In terms of function, the Launchpad is incredibly capable, especially when using Ableton. Some of that functionality is difficult to reach, however. The basic operations are easy enough to access — the buttons, knobs, and grid arrangement are all clear organized and labeled. However, the lack of screen does make some of the more complex functions (e.g., scale mode) annoying or even daunting to use, as there is very little feedback on what setting is active. (This despite some clever workarounds using the colored pads to show settings.) The key combos for many hidden functions can be easy to forget, also; which has required me to keep the manual within easy reach. this kind of hampers the "spontaneous creation" this sort of controller is meant to inspire.

So overall a good product, but could be immeasurably improved with a small screen.

t
Great controller!
tretjakoffff 20.11.2021
I bought it as a universal controller. It integrates perfectly with Ableton Live, but requires constant reference to the manual. I also plan to use it as a sequencer for hardware synths.
It is made of high quality, the surface does not get dirty.
I recommend it!

DG
Nice controller but....
Da Geek 13.04.2022
The Launchpad MK3 is quality built, but there is a BIG flaw: the aftertouch does not work! Novation is aware of it but I suspect it is a hardware problem. If you use aftertouch, stay away from Launchpad MK3
