Neumann TLM 193

AlainK, 03.06.2011
My motivations for this purchase:
- complete my home studio amateur
-being of a wide-diaphragm microphone around 1000 euros to record female and male voices, strings (acoustic guitars, violins) from the woods (flutes) of the brass (trumpets)
- Have a consistent recording chain: TLM 193 microphone, Avalon VT 737SP preamp, Presonus Studiolive 16-4-2 and Cubase 5.

Why this choice ?
- the reputation of the brand
- Various reviews: Audiofanzine, forums ...
- Local TV and professional studios that I know equipped with Neumann

My first impressions 3 days after the purchase:
- beautiful aesthetics and finishing
- disappointment its small size because I had seen only pictures on which it appeared larger.
- its sound quality: its neutrality, the natural sound with comparative tests between the KMS 105, the Behringer B2 and the TLM 193 via the Avalon VT 737SP preamp
- the KM 105 is very close (Neumann oblige) but the B2 which is more powerful metallic sounding
- the TLM 193 makes better on the male voices than the KMS 105
- the difference is blatant on an acoustic guitar (Gibson) the recorded sound is very close to the real sound. Until now I had always taken the acoustic guitars with 2 audiotechnica ATM 33 or T Bone SC 180
- I always have to apply plugin type Izotope or Wave to have a sound guitar correct
- For the TLM 193 which passes of course by the Avalon I think I will not add any plug'in because the sound of the guitar is there

I'm looking forward to testing this microphone on other instruments ...
I read on several forums that the tLM 193 was a mini U87 but I expect to have one to do the comparison.

The negative points :
- its wooden box beautiful but fragile especially for transport. Why did not Neumann put this microphone in a metal box? All low-priced microphones do.
- One suggestion: Neumann should like Brauner add a quality XLR cable given the price ...
- The booklet accompanying TLM 193 is in German and English. (I know German very well) but ...
- The use of this microphone is not specified. Fortunately I have recovered the use of all Neumann microphones in Frankfurt.
- On the Neumann site we find this in French

Overall impression after 3 days: Very satisfactory.

Exately what I was looking for

JuF, 16.12.2014
If you are looking for a neutral large diaphragm microphone, which however a bit "shimmer" puts it, is right here.

The TLM193 is the little brother of the U89, the successor of the U87! The capsule is somewhat smaller, which results in a more neutral behavior at high frequencies. Compared to the U89, of course, the different directivity characteristics are eliminated, but the TLM 193 is less (about 6dB) and has a much larger dynamic capture. Oh, it's also a bit cheaper :-)

I wanted an addition to my previous AKG microphone arsenal (C414, C480, C451, ...). There should be 2 large membranes that are neutral enough to use as ORTF main microphones, which are very low noise and have a more vintage sound that does not show the usual 7-9kHz emphasis.

The microphone records a neutral image of the original source, but with a bit of color. Compared to more coloring microphones (TLM103) sounds in the first moment sometimes "good", but one has in the mix much more possibilities. Heights reindrehen is easier than 1-2 quite narrow narrowband resonances rauszufiltern. As shown in Fig.

I bought 2 of these microphones and run them as stereo pairs. Although these were not matched, the sensitivity is practically the same and the frequency response is in a + -0.5dB tube - not bad for a large diaphragm microphone! There are so many (favorable) stereo pairs worse matched.

So if you have the humming sound of a TLM103, you should try the 193 :-)
