A unique time capsule from the '50s

Gibson 59 Les Paul Standard HPT Amber Burst #1

The Gibson '59 LP Standard HPT Amber Burst is a recreation of what's often been called the Stradivarius of electric guitars. This Les Paul, hand-built in an extremely limited run in the legendary Murphy Lab, carries Gibson's reputation for craftsmanship into the present day – the guitar on sale here is exactly the instrument shown in the photos. It features the legendary neck shape of the Carmelita Burst, widely regarded as the near‑perfect Gibson profile. It sits somewhere between a '59 medium C and a '58 rounded C – a true handful in the best sense of the word. There's another tribute to the late '50s in the DiMarzio Double White pickups, a nod to the shortages of black plastic in 1959; those white bobbins could scarcely be more prized by collectors if they were made of white gold. Alongside that, this Les Paul comes with nickel humbucker covers, a detached pickguard, a case, and a certificate. Its weight of just under 4kg is also worth highlighting: It sits right in the sweet spot, allowing for superb sustain and clear, articulate tones.

Vintage wiring and the PAF sound

This one-off Les Paul Burst also comes with a number of ways to further individualise its look, with a classic cream pickguard and nickel pickup covers – so those Double Whites can be kept a secret. The DiMarzio 36th Anniversary humbuckers installed here measure a moderate 7.31 kOhm in the neck position, capturing that glassy PAF character, while the bridge comes in at 8.6 kOhm – bringing the classic Les Paul Rock'n'Roll voice, with plenty of dynamic headroom for driven tones. The wiring also follows vintage spec, using 500k CTS pots and paper‑in‑oil capacitors. What this does is allow a broad degree of control over attack, gain structure, and a wide, usable sweep on the tone control. For anyone chasing that now‑fabled late‑'50s Les Paul sound, this Gibson '59 LP Standard HPT Amber Burst stands as a superb example – so close to the original in both spec and build that it's almost indistinguishable.

Vintage specs and ageing

Gibson's dedication to vintage specs is what gives Murphy Lab instruments their ability to transport players to another era. As expected from a premium Les Paul, this model features a one‑piece mahogany body with a two‑piece, hand‑selected figured maple top. Its subtle ageing is carefully applied in the Gibson Murphy Lab, creating both the visual and tactile impression of one of those mythical guitars with over 60 years of stories behind it. Construction follows the original blueprint as well: There's a long neck tenon, which helps support that legendary Burst sustain. Details such as hide glue are also part of the package; this historically accurate adhesive is labour‑intensive to work with, but it allows the individual wood components to come together as a cohesive whole.

About Gibson Murphy Lab

Since 1902, Gibson has been an iconic name in the music world, with its instruments captivating musicians for generations. To recreate the spirit and craftsmanship of the Golden Era (1940–1969), Gibson goes to extraordinary lengths – analyzing the chemical composition of original parts, weighing and measuring vintage instruments, and 3D-scanning every detail to faithfully reproduce them in their Custom Shop models. One of the most meticulous divisions is the Gibson Murphy Lab, led by ageing specialist Tom Murphy, whose relicing process captures the feel, tone, and visual character of vintage instruments, using ultra-thin nitrocellulose finishes, hide glue, lightweight tonewoods, and authentic wear to deliver an unmatched vintage experience.

Just the right Burst!

Finding the right Burst, especially one that delivers the feel and sound associated with so many Rock'n'Roll legends, is no easy task for a discerning guitar collector. Of course, these unique Murphy Lab instruments only have to find one player to accompany them for a lifetime, as each one has its own identity. Every maple top is like a fingerprint, and the finish varies subtly depending on the wood's figure and colour. That's why each individual premium guitar at Thomann is documented in detail, helping players choose the instrument that truly suits them. Weight also plays a key role for many players, with preferences often falling either side of that ideal middle ground: This specific piece weighs in at exactly 3.88kg, or 8.55 pounds. The Gibson '59 LP Standard HPT Amber Burst is available in a very small series – this one is #1 of only four – making it possible to select exactly the right guitar from our online shop.
