Fishman Pickup for Resonator

I bought this so I could plug in my resonator guitar through my PA. While the set up is relatively simple, the sound is not the greatest. I have the volume up quite high to be able to hear the resonator over the second acoustic guitar plugged into the PA system. It needs a EQ to boost the volume and also for the fact that the sound is very thin. There are no problems with buzz or feedback at all, the only thing is you will need to mess around with the EQ settings on the PA system or EQ Pedal and the volume a good bit in order to do the sound justice.

After a long trial, I got this sound reducer for my resonator guitar (Gtretsch Alligator, unbeatable in this price segment and amazingly close to the more expensive / older models with some skill for fine adjustments and with 016er on 056er strings!). The result after many researches in the network: Often either only advised to Highlander pickups or just a micro (Sm57 about) one should use. I've done that with both of my Resos a lot and a long time, but often that was not enough with an acoustic amplifier or in band settings or only under unfavorable conditions (coupling, very close attention, etc.).

With the quite simple installation (unscrew the cover plate and screw the pickup segment under the cone, do not forget the plastic special part, you can only find out on the Fishman homepage in the installation assistant ((PDF) and the endpin socket in one of the small holes screw in the holes, no drilling and so on, great) is ready with little effort the pickup.

The only disadvantage compared to the model of Highlander which I can compare with (for Continental Tricone the Highlander Magnophonic, which sounds damn good, an active model with integrated preamp / preamp) is the comparatively very low output of the Fishman Resopohonic (Bluegrass is the right name , the "Nashville" pickup is for Dobros / Resonator guitars with spider bridge only).

But that's not a PROBLEM, if you have an external amplifier, such as some recommended by Berhinger, or - as in my case - a DI box with preamp (PARA Acoustic DI by LR Baggs). Because then you can wonderfully increase the output volume, so that the input signal at the amp or the PA is loud enough.

The sound is in the default setting (all neutral in the EQ) quite high and fitzelig, so sounds more like Piezo and less after Resonatorguitar (less to Cone). But taking the HIGH COMPLETE WAY, to zero, the result is quite useful and sounds appropriate. I did that first on the preamp, but you can do that again on the amp, so the sound is actually usable or even good.

Well, you need a preamp, otherwise a) the passive (but completely against feedback not susceptible) Tonabnhemer (in contrast to the active model of it or the Highlander) is a bit quiet and b) is rather neutral set quite high and thin in the sound.

With preamp you can make the sound you want. The preamplifier, which is already integrated into the built-in system in the Highlander, is generally without settings like external EQs, but then the preamp is installed and regulates the high output and the warmth of the sound.

With the Fishman, which is discussed here, íst with an external preamp also quite a lot possible and he was already tested by me in the rehearsal room and at small live gigs (on mixer and speakers and acoustic guitar amplifier). With a mixer you have again additional control options (again for output, heat over the gain and EQ for sound representation). With the Acoustic Amplifier (Marshall 50W with two speakers) you get to the limit quite fast compared to the Highlander with its high output, but there was still enough master volume left, which I had at most 50%, but in the preamp ( LR Baggs DI) everything full on 12 (volumes) and also in the guitar channel. But feasible and more than adequate for my purposes. Especially since the sound is quite punchy (with settings on the preamp, so heights all down, everything else around the middle or something more) and reflects the Cone sound very well.

So if you are looking for a (in sum but not very inexpensive) version for your single-cone resonator guitars, you can try this variant with the help of this guide.

Pluses are:
-Simple installation without having to drill on the instrument
-fast not susceptible to feedback (only at very high volume right in front of the amp, which would be controllable with notch filters on amp or DI preamp)
- with EQ very well malleable sound

Disadvantages are:
- much too expensive (but the pick up would have to be much cheaper, you also need an external preamp that he really is good, that's extra costs, because you can buy a more expensive system a la Highlander)
- too little output from home

Otherwise, but a very useful product (just for a cheaper or second guitar, for example, if you already have external preamps). With the here described hints so only conditionally the right thing for the one or the other, but worth a try.
