Dimarzio EJ

Rohan4, 02.04.2015
This is a pickup for a specific purpose.
It's not an all rounder. You use this to brighten up dark sounding guitars (it can go some way to make a Les Paul sound like a Gretch or a 'thicker' strat).
It is exceedingly well made and sounds better through a Vox sounding amp.

Actually not what I was looking for but ...

Mikroton SBF, 03.05.2016
... little output - a lot of sound, you could characterize the DP212 EJ Custom Bridge. However, the sound sometimes looks a bit thin, which unfortunately unfortunately diminishes the otherwise very positive impression. But one after anonther...

For a Mahagony Paula, I was looking for a new pickup for the bridge position, which is not quite as aggressive to the point and should rather sound in the direction of clear, open jazz. After some comparisons, I decided to use DiMarzios DP212 EJ Custom because it is clearly emphasized with moderate output, which often also indicates a rather high resonance frequency. So all that I had in mind. Quite by the way: The neck position I occupied with a Seymour Duncan SH-2N Jazz Neck.

Thomann's excellent service ensured the fastest delivery of the pick-up. Excellent!

The processing of the pick-up is faultless. No wax remedies, which is not always so with DiMarzio. The cap is immaculately nickel-plated, so you could use it as a shaving mirror if necessary. The polepieces can be individually adjusted with a screwdriver to compensate for possible loudness differences of the strings. The four-core cable (plus extra ground cable for the shielding of the cable harness) is long enough to bridge even longer installation distances and loads variable interconnections of the coils. The enclosed English manual gives you numerous tips on DiMarzio's website, there are circuit diagrams for almost all problems. Two pairs of screws, one with a simple slot and the other with a cross-slot, and two slightly long springs round off the accessories. A humbucker, as it should be. The installation was largely without problems, only the somewhat long springs made it difficult to screw on the frame. I have connected the pick-up to a push / pull potentiometer so I can use it either serially or in parallel.

Soundcheck
Already at the first try out the sound characteristics of the DP212 very much depending on the selected Preset of the Mustang III amplifier (which is very tuned on Gitten from the own barn!). Clean the DP212 is very transparent, finely defined, pearly - yes, but also somewhat thin and tending to a little metallic hardness, unfortunately. It is not useful for this because in the crunch or distort, he suddenly suddenly bursts up, scratches and rushes on the most beautiful side, without giving him a chance. Well, not exactly what I was looking for, but it has its charm and sounds damn good if you want to play 80s / 90s indie or grunge. The sound can be clearly audible through the push / pull potentiometer. Serial is the sound richer, parallel throttles the output somewhat and it becomes somewhat hollow. In this respect, the DP212 scores in the discipline of versatility.

Resumee
The sonically perfect all-round pick-up will come to the market tomorrow, if at all. The DP212 has its strengths clean in all areas of the rather acoustic character, eg folk and singer / songwriter, in addition, one can come close to everything, which is to go in the direction of cleaner Strat. But we always hear a difference to what sounds in my own ears. Only the jazz sounds wanted by me wanted to adjust, maybe I should have taken the PAF Pro ... - the DP212 makes me even more fun in the crunch, because he is really great, no matter whether serial or parallel. Moreover, it reacts well to the (logarhythmic) tone potentiometer, which, if required, controls the very well defined heights well. And, last but not least, as a humbucker, he does not grow. As a singlecoil I have not tried it, but in my experience with DiMarzios the sound should not be very different from the parallel circuit, perhaps with even less output and, of course, the hum.

Oh, for the jazzy sounds you want, the Seymour Duncan Jazz Neck makes a name for itself, but it's a different story.

Greetings to all guitar fans
