Clear the ring for Round 3!

Since their debut in 2016, Katana amps have become some of the most successful guitar amplifiers on the market. With a smart range of power options, compact dimensions, and a generous collection of built-in sounds and effects, they strike a perfect balance for today's players, offering professional sound in a portable format. After all, nobody wants to lug around more gear than necessary. Add to that their wallet-friendly price point, and it's easy to see why the Katana series continues to be such a hit. Now, Boss has introduced the Katana 100 Gen 3, a new and improved version of one of their most popular and powerful models, complete with enhanced features and – just as importantly – still for an extremely attractive price.

Boss Katana 100 Gen 3, electric guitar combo amp

This Katana's ready for battle

Boss has refined its Tube Logic engine to deliver even more authentic amp tones. One standout addition is the new "Pushed" amp type, designed to emulate the raw, dynamic edge of a valve amp being driven hard. Like the other amp models, it's available in two voicings. The effects section remains split into five blocks, offering the usual high-quality selection. Delay times and modulation effects can be tapped in by hand or controlled via an external footswitch or pedalboard. Around the back, users can find inputs for expression pedals, AUX in, headphones, FX loop, Power Amp in, and USB for direct recording. New to Gen 3 is a slot for an optional Bluetooth adapter, which is ideal for wireless audio streaming or remote control via the Tone Studio app.

A universal warrior

The Katana series continues to grow in both sonic range and versatility. The Gen 3 model of the Katana 100 offers a broad spectrum of amp and effect combinations, ranging from presets for acoustic guitars and sparkling cleans to rich crunch and soaring modern leads. The responsive three-band EQ makes tone shaping intuitive, and with switchable output power and cab resonance, the amp mimics the feel and response of a cranked valve combo at lower volumes. The Boss Katana 100 Gen 3 has a universal package of features that makes it a great way for ambitious beginners to get fully kitted out for years to come. And while its design makes it accessible and user-friendly, its performance levels are likely to impress even experienced or semi-pro players.

About Boss

The Boss brand has been an important part of the Japanese Roland Corporation since the mid-1970s and has caused a sensation from its inception, especially with its compact effect pedals but also multi-effect units and other helpful tools for guitarists. The company's single effect pedals in particular are legendary and can be found in almost every guitarist's home. An incredible 15 million have been sold to date. With its Katana series, the manufacturer now also offers excellent amplifiers at a very interesting price point.

A versatile third-gen powerhouse

With a wide array of amp tones and effects, an immensely powerful 100W output, and a 12" speaker in a compact combo format, the Boss Katana 100 Gen 3 has once again raised the bar – other affordable guitar amps will be blown out of the ring. Still, it's as comfortable in a living room session as it is in rehearsal spaces or recording studios, thanks to the USB output that allows for direct, high-quality capture with spacious tone. And when it's time to take it on stage, the third-generation Katana 100 will be ready, especially when it's paired with one of the many suitable footswitches available. To top it off, the Boss Tone Studio app gives musicians a deep suite of editing tools in a clean, intuitive interface, and now, with the optional Bluetooth adaptor, users can tweak their sound wirelessly from their smartphone or tablet.

I am using many tube amps and valve heads with cab but katana 100 gen 3 can be better than all of them the variation that it provides and the sound quality is amazing definitely best choice as the first amp but you can’t say that it is begginer amp because they are perfect for all level guitarists i am using my katana much more than all my tube staff and if you thinking about buying katana definitely go either gen 3 100 and thomann will help you with that to conclude it is the best option that you can get for today there are no many tube amps or solid state which can get at least near to it sound quality and especially want to mention tube logic OMG how good they did it i am enjoying as a guy who were using more that 20 different tube amps including messa and etc katana beats all of them

A
my first amp and love it !
Arnaud1975 28.04.2025
I started to play guitar in december 2024 (i'm 49, i guess i started my midlife crisis :oD ), and i didn't want to spend a fortune on a new hobby without knowing if it was just a whim or not! At same time, i wanted something decent that makes me keep playing. after searching around and reading many reviews and youtube video's , it was clear that Boss Katana had very good reviews and is loved by many.
so i bought this amp and i must say that it has all what you need and more, to have a good fun. effects wise, there is nothing i can imagine you can't find on the Boss Tone studio. So no need to directly invest in many pedals. Sound wise, i do like the sound it produces. Of course i have been tempted also by valve amps, but you get so much for your bucks with a Boss Katana that i would advise it to anybody, especially if starting playing guitar.
My only advise is to follow well some recent youtube video's on the process of updating the amp's firmware (in this case, how to update a Gen 3). i wish this process was just more easy, more automatic (like an automatic firmware update when being connected to the internet) but thanks God, i had seen some video's about it and i was fully aware that it needed attention to do this in order to don't mess up the on board firmware. This process is really quick but it's not automated and needs handwork and is important to do it properly. This said, i don't want to discourage anybody about this. it's no rocket science, just need some little attention! My second advise would be to download and use the Boss Tone Studio software. it will give you so much more options (a very useful Noise gate in my case) , which you won't have if you just simply use the dialing buttons on the amp.
All by all, i can recommand this amp. It has all what you need (power attenuator to lower it from 100W to 50W, to 0,5W), it has many connection possibilities, it has bluetooth (recommanded too if you like to use jam tracks but it's sadly still an option in 2025!), it has an headphone entry (needs a small jack adapter from 3,5mm to 6,5mm), and it has so many effects in the Boss Tone Studio that you won't really need pedals (but i read that it is a very good pedal platform if you like to build a pedal board, or if you already have one).

F
Katana Gen 3
FalxCro 13.06.2024
I had a Katana MK1 (original) and I was very pleased to have great tones in this unit. Now Katana Gen 3 opens for me new spectre of sounds. Great amp, easy copy tones from MK1 to Gen 3 with app on computer. Tones are produced differently and new speaker is much different feel to play. Pushed channel is so responsive. Best friend for your guitar.

D
Arguably better than a tube amp, especially for someone who's on a budget
DBong 27.08.2025
I've been playing electric guitar for quite a while, but this is my first "proper" amp. Don't be fooled by the price, this definitely rivals with €2000+ tube amps (without naming brands, I have played this amp and a very popular and well regarded tube amp in the same room with the same guitar, and the Boss Katana still came up ahead). Oh not to mention, this amp weighs about half of what a tube amp + cab would weigh.

It's a no brainer.

N.B.: The Boss Katana app is a MUST, that's where this amp really shines.
