Standard Delivery TimesTo the uninitiated, function generators may seem like little more than glorified envelopes, when in reality they are among the most versatile building blocks in a modular system. Designed for 3U Eurorack format (14 HP), the Behringer Waves is a comprehensive digital function generator capable of producing both modulation signals and full audio outputs. It covers everything from two-stage envelopes with simple or complex curves, through LFO signals with variable shapes, to oscillator waveforms with flexible morphing. More than just a modulation source, it also serves as a playable digital oscillator, opening up a wide range of sonic possibilities. Inspired by a high-end original and fully CV-controllable, the Behringer Waves is capable of producing evolving contours and shifting timbres that add depth and dynamics to any Eurorack setup.
The Behringer Waves is a ‘tidal modulator’, i.e. a function generator that produces continuously varying waveforms that can be stretched, skewed, or synced and that morph freely between envelopes, LFOs and oscillators. Three modes are available: AD and AR for one-shot envelopes, and Cycle. Envelope contours are shaped via a single Slope control, which can be morphed via CV in real time. In Cycle mode, a periodic signal is generated that can serve either as a CV-controllable LFO or as a digital oscillator, playable chromatically through the V/Oct input. The Shape and Smoothness parameters allow the waveform to be refined and transformed, while full CV-control at 16-bit resolution allows for highly dynamic performance and exquisite precision. Four outputs simultaneously deliver related but distinct variations in shape, amplitude, time, and frequency, providing further options for modulation and sound design.
Eurorack users seeking a streamlined alternative to the complexity and extensive logic functions of Behringer’s Abacus will find in the Waves a direct and versatile solution. Its straightforward control layout is well suited to sequencer-driven patches, where envelopes can be quickly shaped and modulated via the Slope function. As a digital oscillator, it can produce a far wider range of spectra than a classic VCO, and these sounds are far from static or sterile. The Shape control bends waveforms into linear, exponential, or sinusoidal curves, further expanding sonic possibilities. With this balance of immediacy and depth, the Behringer Waves can greatly enhance a compact Eurorack setup – although in practice, each patch can only be used for one of the module's core capabilities at a time.
The company, which was founded in Germany by Uli Behringer and now manufactures its products in China, has been known for affordable and great-value equipment since its very first product, the Studio Exciter F. An array of mixing consoles (such as the Eurodesk MX8000), signal processors, and later sound amplification and monitoring equipment, has made it possible for countless musicians to fit out their home studios, practice rooms, and mobile PAs within budget limits that were previously unthinkable. The acquisition of other companies, including Midas, Klark Teknik, and TC Electronic, meant that new product groups were added - and also resulted in the technical expertise of these companies being incorporated into product development.
When set to Cycle mode, the Behringer Waves can operate across three frequency ranges. In Low and Mid it remains in the sub-audio domain as an LFO for shaping modulation signals, while at higher rates it enters the audio spectrum and becomes a playable oscillator. In both roles it produces signals that can be continuously reshaped in real time: Slope shifts symmetry, Shape adjusts overall contour, and Smoothness incorporates a wavefolder for complex harmonic spectra. An external clock input with phase-locked loop (PLL) capability also allows Waves to lock to other oscillators and derive synchronised subharmonics. Combined with external CV, these features create dynamic, evolving outputs, whether LFOs or oscillators, bringing equal depth to modulation duties and audio performance.
