IK Multimedia ToneX Cab

So I've been using the Tonex Cab for a while now, and I wanted to share my thoughts on it.
What I Really Like:

This thing is super easy to use and doesn't take up too much space – plus it's nice and light! Build quality feels solid too, so I'm not worried about anything breaking on me.

The aux in has been a game-changer! I run audio from my computer through an instrument cable and listen to music or even watch movies through it. The amp pushes a ton of air, which makes it really enjoyable for that purpose. Sound quality is excellent – I'd even say it rivals some nicer audio speakers (though I'm no audiophile, so take that as you will!).

The aux in is also perfect for backing tracks. Having a separate volume knob for it makes it so easy to balance everything just right. There's no dedicated EQ for the aux input, but honestly, I don't think it needs one.

I'm fairly happy with how electric guitar tones sound through this when using the Tonex pedal. The tones translate pretty faithfully – maybe the highs are slightly rolled off, but the onboard EQ can fix that right up. Fresh out of the box, I'd say it handles clean and rock tones best. If you're into extreme metal, you might need to tweak things a bit more.

Volume-wise? Plenty of headroom here – I'd totally feel confident using this with a band.

A Few Quirks:

The aux in is line level only, which means you can't just plug a mic straight into the XLR and use this as a vocal amp – you'd need a preamp first. It would be awesome if they added a pad switch for vocals, because that one feature would make this perfect for solo/duo performances with guitar and vocals.

The "Amp Tone" control is... interesting? I could probably live without it, to be honest. It seems to boost mids and overall volume. It's fun to play around with though! I sometimes like it at around 50%, but rarely max it out.
Oh, and the power cable is only 185 cm long – sometimes I wish it was longer, but you can always swap it out for a different one.

Bottom Line:

Sure, the "Amp Tone" control might be a bit overhyped, and the sound quality is good rather than mind-blowing, but this is genuinely a great product that's turned out to be super useful. I've honestly been using it almost every day since I got it! I paid 800€ on pre-order, and considering how useful it is combined with the good sound quality, I'd say it was worth it!

This is a very good frfr cab/amp for modelers/capture devices.
I've had 7 different frfr's before this and this is easily and by far the best, but still not quite my cup of tea. All these have the same inherent 'problem' which is that there is always a certain 'coldness' and a 'stoney hardness' in the tone. I'v played guitar since the 80's and used tube amps (Marshalls and Fenders) all my life and have grown accustomed to the harmonic content and warmth that they have.
Some 9 years ago I needed to go digital (I now use a Quad Cortex, after owning a Helix and a Kemper) for silent stage and have been looking for an frfr for home use/small gigs. While the QC is an absolute beast for authentic guitar tones it still needs to be amplified properly unless you just go direct to mixing console or only do home recording.

The ToneX Cab is a very good unit for amplifying modelers/capture devices and can be VERY loud for band practice and gigs. Very loud! Build quality is great and it's very easy to use. Like I mentioned above this unit also has a certain 'cold hardness' to it which ALL frfr's seem to have, and although the ToneX Cab does have much less of it.... it still has it.

This cab will probably be best suited for those who play metal and hard rock, but not so great if you play blues/jazz/country/cleaner stuff as I do. Playing dynamics do come across nicely but are clearly lacking in harmonic content when comparing to tube amps, and there is also some kind of flatness or '2D' quality to the overall sound just like other frfr's.

To sum up this is the first frfr that does come close to the real thing and you will most likely be very happy with it - unless clean and edge of break up sounds are where you live. I would happily recommend this cab for anyone who plays only distorted/hard rock/metal, but not so much for nuanced/cleaner stuff. This unit goes back as it was not for me. Thumbs up for ToneX, they are really close to perfect and probably their 'next gen' will be what I'm looking for.

Ich habe, genau wie alle anderen auch sehr lange mit großer Vorfreude auf diesen Moment gewartet. Endlich lieferbar, endlich DER echte Amp Sound wie versprochen. Ich habe genau wie ihr auch sämtliche Videos im Netz angesehen, und versucht mir ein Bild vorab zu verschaffen. Wie sie letzten Freitag kam wurde sie sofort ausgepackt und direkt noch zwischen Tür und Angel angeschlossen. Naja dachte ich beim ersten Anschlag der Les Paul, das ist bestimmt falsch eingestellt, bestimmt die falsche Gitarre. Strat angeschlossen…..echt? Das wars? Naja, dann liegt es sicherlich am TonexPedal, ich habe etwas falsch eingestellt. Alles auf Anfang. Nein. Das klingt nicht nach Amp! Im Clean überhaupt nicht. Ich hatte mich auf den perligen Fender Sound gefreut den ich auf dem Kopfhörer habe. Nichts. Gut dachte ich, Effekte rausdrehen. Ne. Letzten Samstag habe ich sie zum Gig mitgenommen und hier hat sie sich schnell und leicht aufbauen lassen. Klasse, dachte ich, wenn sie jetzt noch klingt dann bin ich überzeugt, denn zuhause hab ich sie natürlich nur auf Zimmerlautstärke hören können. Sie ist mörderlaut. Ich habe die vor den Drums aufgebaut und max mit 20% befeuert. Mehr muss nicht sein, haut sie alles weg. Aber der Sound??????!!!!!! Im Proberaum spiele ich über eine günstige Harley Benton FrFr 212 für 350,-€. Die tut exakt das was sie soll. Für einen sehr sehr guten Preis. Ich habe in meinem langen Musikerleben über 500 Gigs gespielt und so ziemlich über alles gespielt was es gibt. Ob an analogen oder Digitalen Lösungen, Inear , alle Monitore. DI Box mit oder Ohne IR. Egal, alles. Aber das versprochene Wunder ist hier nicht eingetreten. Gut aber nicht das Beste. Und nicht für diesen Preis. Ich glaube noch immer ich habe etwas falsch eingestellt …..sie steht im Moment hier vor mir und ich gucke ungläubig drauf. Habe andere Preamps angeschlossen. Victory und/oder Friedman. Nein, sie klingt nicht besser als die Thomann Hausmarke und geht wieder zurück. Sorry, aber mich hat das Teil nicht abgeholt.

Also ich kann mich dem Kollegen der hier ebenfalls das Tonex-Cab getestet hat nur anschliessen. Nachdem ich schon vor Jahren auch nach langem Suchen und Testen auf eine sehr gute FRFR-Cab-Lösung mit der EV PXM-12MP gestoßen bin dachte ich mir nachdem ich so viel im Netz gelesen und auf YouTube gesehen und gehört habe muss ich das Teil unbedingt mal checken. Jetzt nachdem es lange Zeit ja nicht lieferbar war hab ichs bestellt und an meinen Kemper angeschlossen. Angefangen mit den Clean-Sounds gefielen mir diese noch am Besten, mit dem eingebauten 3-Band-EQ kann man hier auch noch sehr schön tweaken, sehr gut auch der cleane Headroom das Ding ist echt mächtig laut. Auch die Sounds meiner Yamaha E-Akustik klingen über den Kemper und die Tonex-Cab ganz ok. ABER...die angezerrten und vollverzerrten Sounds klingen echt kacke, da bin ich maßlos enttäuscht im Vergleich zu meiner EV Monitor-Wedge klingt der Plexi-Sound sehr undifferenziert und das Etwas in den Mitten kommt gar nicht rüber. Ja ich weiss, SOUND ist schwer zu beschreiben aber auch der gehypte AMP-TONE-Regler tut hier nichts gutes zur Sache. Am erträglichsten finde ich den noch am Linksanschlag, nach rechts gedreht gibt es so einen Mittennöck der komplett nervt. Die Box geht somit wieder zurück. Sorry, aber mich hat das Teil ebenfalls überhaupt nicht abgeholt.
