Introduction to Fretless Bass

This is an excellent book which goes through all the important aspects of playing fretless bass. It the beginning, one can find the basics of fretless bass, after that there is a section with the basic scales (ionian to locrian). After completing the basics you will be forced to get your fretless chops to the next level by practising all the fretless exclusive techniques like vibrato and sliding harmonics. Finally in the last chapters you will find a variety of playing styles to practice from rock to jazz fusion and beyond. All and all it is a great book, but keep in mind that you need to have a certain level of proficiency at playing bass before you try to tackle this bad boy. I highly recommend buying it if you are ready to commit on studying this amazing melodic instrument that is called fretless bass.

Eigentlich nur für 5-Saiter

Die Übungen und Tabulaturen sind für 5-Saiter und Gitarrenfingersatz (jeder Finger ein Bund) ausgelegt und gehen oft bis zum tiefen C. Wer einen 4-Saiter spielt und den Kontrabassfingersatz (kleiner Finger und Ringfinger greifen gemeinsam) verwendet, muss die Übungen also in doppelter Weise abändern und ist darauf angewiesen aus anderen Quellen zu erfahren, welcher Fingersatz dabei günstig ist.

Ich fände es auch besser, wenn die Audiotracks mit einem Einzähler beginnen, statt unmittelbar mit dem der ersten gespielten Note. Es fällt schwer, sofort mitzuspielen, nachdem man Play gedrückt hat.

Das vorgestellte Material an sich scheint inhaltlich sehr nützlich zu sein und im Verlauf der Schule auch sehr anspruchsvoll zu werden, aber ich habe bislang erst 9 von 71 Übungen gespielt. Die Erläuterungen zu den Übungen sind eher knapp.
